November 13, 2013 - Proof that random selection does not always result in a sub-par outcome, I plucked this from my local supermarket shelf based on nothing more than the grape variety, the price and the reasonably fetching label design. The original intention was for it to be a cooking wine.
A fortuitous decision, this is an unashamed crowd pleaser. A New World-style wine made in the heart of Burgundy, in & around Lugny, equidistant between Dijon and Lyon. Whilst largely single note, namely sweet apples, it comes with a fragrant bouquet and had everyone around the table asking for more. The drinking notes tell us it is “medium-body, rich and fruity wine with a lively and spicy finish” all of which I agree to maybe with the exception of the spicy finish. Given its price, there is every reason to have a dozen bottles around for those summer bbqs, for midweek drinking, for a bottle that you have no hesitation in opening.
