Community Tasting Notes 34

October 26, 2021 - The bottle was opened and slow-oxed for three and half hours prior to the tasting, then aerated in a decanter for about 30 minutes. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Evolved blackish-red color with a maroon hue. Very old and somewhat tired nose with tertiary aromas of raisins, some tomato puree, a little bit of tobacco, light autumnal notes of damp leaves, a hint of mushroomy funk and a sweeter touch of plum compote. The wine is full-bodied on the palate, but the taste feels quite thin and underwhelming with tired flavors of damp leaves, some gravelly mineral tones, a little bit of raisiny dark fruit, light oxidative notes of beef jerky and a hint of prunes. Structurally the wine is rather soft and resolved, thanks to the medium-to-moderate acidity and rather soft tannins that don't really retain any grip. The finish is savory, somewhat thin and rather short with tired, tertiary flavors of pruney dark fruits, some meaty umami, a little bit of bouillon, light earthy notes of sous-bois, an oxidative hint of soy sauce and a touch of mushroomy funk.

Still somewhat drinkable but overall a rather old and tired Bordeaux that has seen some better days. Most of the fruit has already faded away and what little remains starts to feel quite oxidative. Time to drink up.

September 23, 2018 - Sauerkirsche, Brombeeren, Holz, Gewürze, etwas Tabak und Leder. Gute Säure und junge Tannine. Mittelerer Abgang

January 27, 2016 - By no means a great wine but it was actually very pleasing to drink. NO dryness or unbalance. This bottle was stored under perfect conditions and that was a major factor too. Short finish but of course this is 1994.

December 4, 2015 - From multiple magnums at our Christmas party in Munich. Fully mature but with at least another 5 years' life in it, at least in magnum. Gorgeous nose of warm autumnal leaves and bracken. Velvety palate with fully resolved tannins but still retaining a firm spine of structure. No greenness, which is usually a problem in this very wet vintage. Very more-ish. A great result for the vintage but not quite in the league of the '94 Pontet Canet. Worth seeking out for its superb value and the great pleasure it delivers.

January 17, 2015 - pnp, same source, same exhausted smell, rather pigsty than banyard, and some sort of iron. not a bad wine, also signs of chocolade on the palate in the back end. but ways behind former sister vineyard Gruaud Larose. glad to have only one bottle left.
