December 27, 2012 - Completely opaque and slightly viscous dark cherry appearance with faint purple highlights. Slightly muted, sweet nose with aromas of cherry jam, ripe blackcurrant, some vanilla oak and a hint of milk chocolate. Very sweet and full-bodied palate with flavors of pronounced peppery spice, cherry jam, ripe plummy fruit, some sour cherry bitterness, a little lingonberry sourness and a hint of bitter medicinal herbs. Quite low on tannins, but still enough to give the quite sweet (160 g/l RS) palate some astringent bite and sense of firmness. The quite high acidity serves as the most obvious counterpoint to the sweetness, keeping the wine from tasting excessively sweet and sticky. Lighter and brighter finish with very long and somewhat tart flavors of lingonberry jam, peppery spice, minty herbal notes, some smoke, a little sour cherry and a hint of dark chocolate.

A bit simple and still very youthful Recioto that is very tasty and very typical of the style. Quite hard to pair with sweet desserts, as the bitterness that is kept in check by the residual sugar becomes more pronounced as the dessert balances the wine's sweetness away. I'd pair this wine with savory desserts, tangy cheeses or very dark chocolate that is very low on sweetness. Furthermore, I'd give the wine some more age, as it seems still very youthful and thus, a bit too simple and one-dimensional. Some more depth and complexity couldn't hurt it. A good purchase at 19,24€ (500 ml bottle).
