Community Tasting Notes 5

January 14, 2012 - Bretty spicy notes at the forefront (cinnamon and sumac). Pomegranate, tar, and baked plums. Bracing acidity. Finishes with dry tannins. A bit past peak of maturity and disappointing compared to the 2003.

March 21, 2008 - (Fig, Charleston) Nice earthy funk and spice oil aromas. Bright acids with a strong tannic bite which get subsumed into a mixture of dried berries, resin elements and earth. Light bodied. Very intense, but suave and balanced. Definite raw side to it, but played very well with food from crudo to chicken liver pate to steak.

December 29, 2006 - Initially very, very tight. Vanilla nose and nothing much other than austere tannins. However, what an amazing transformation over 3-4 hours. Nose became effusive with black licorice, pepper and fruit. Complex taste with earth, mineral, and black fruits. Absolutely wonderful.

February 12, 2006 - Very good winemaking. Black fruits; quite tannic. Evidently grown from volcanic soil. Structure; spicy -- uniquely aglianico, exotic aromas of juniper, balsam. Definitely a keeper. I plan to reorder. Bravo to this up and comer.

October 29, 2005 - Decanted for about 3 hours and then served with an impromtu dinner with friends: deep ruby red color gave off smokey, licorice, chocolate notes. In the mouth, it was rich in dried cherry and licorice flavors with some resin notes. This wine is powerfully tannic and probably will show iits rich fruit flavors in about 3 hours. Yet, still it was very approachable, quite enjoyable and not unbalanced at this stage. Maybe 9 hours of decanting...
