April 26, 2007 - Burgundy with ruby on the rim. Nose of cherry, earth, brown sugar, tobo and some spice. The palate tracks the nose very well then adds mocha and a finish of anise. Picking a nit, if only a bit, something stemmy slides in the flavor profile at the mid-palate. But all in all, this is a very good wine. A fair amount of sediment on the shoulder. I’m disappointed that that this is my last bottle of this. 13% alc. With veal scallopini. Highly Recommended.

July 3, 2003 - Saturday, March 03, 2001 nose of smoke and cherries. Palate of cherries and tobo. Good acidity and tannins. This will continue to improve for quite some time (2-3 years). with pork tenderloin with cherry chutney at the Hofers with Lou and Rafe
Thursday, March 21, 2002 Bright purple with cherry on the rim. Very tart cherry with some wet dog and funk nose. Loads of tart cherry, but tight and compact on the palate. Thin midpalate. I am not sure about the finish, but there is an herbal/peppery quality (not vegetal) and I’d almost have to say pixy stix dust or sweet-tarts when they finish, which is to say a funky tart taste. The wine is well structured with a good acidic backbone to carry it forward for a few years, but just not giving much right now. It is tight and just not ’together.’ Nice body. This wine is still tight should open up in about 6 to 12 months. (Much brighter when tasted 2 years ago.) These wines have surprising longevity to them and do go through stages of opening and closing. Served with Fontina, bacon & mushroom lasagna.
Wednesday, February 26, 2003 First Night - Ugh! Cloudy purple. And what nose there was, was much of nothing. Disjointed and thin with an occasional hint of cherry or raspberry fruit. Tight and tannic. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Completely closed down. 2/25/03. Second Night - What a difference. Beautiful deep purple color and a nose of raspberry, vanilla, earth and tar. Still tight and tannic on the palate, but showing some fruit and finishing tart with some earthiness and vanilla. Fair finish. Lots of unresolved tannins. While this doesn’t read like a Barbera this is typical of Barboursville’s better Barberas. They develop through a dumb stage and in better vintages, come out very nicely at the end. This wine needs at least another 2-3 years. Last tasted about 11 months ago when it was starting to show signs of shutting down. 2/26/03.
Thursday, July 03, 2003 Was not my intention to have this as I’d sworn it off for a year of so since it is in a dumb stage. Pulled this by mistake, but what a nice mistake. Much better than in February of this year. Dark, red fruits on the nose and palate. Pencil, cherry, vanilla and some licorice. Acidity is much more in balance. Will try not to have another bottle for a year or so. With veal saltimbocca from L’Italia.
