March 22, 2020 - A big, bombastic wine with tons of dark brooding fruit. It mixes a very fruit-forward style with finesse & elegance, but after 3 hours of decanting it was still tightly closed, so we trudged through and drank it up. All of the typical superlatives apply, but it was not at it's best.

February 21, 2020 - Smooth, drinking very well, still ample tannins

December 31, 2019 - Probably time to refresh this note. Pop and pour into a decanter (throwing some fine sediment right at the bottom of the bottle, so watch your decant). In the glass, clear rose-red at the rim, fading rapidly to near-black at the core. On the nose, raspberries, raspberries, and more raspberries. On the palate, grenache liqueur, with secondary saline and floral notes, and persistent tannins on a moderately long finish.

I find it really difficult to judge most Saxum wines for aging potential - usually, they are extremely fruit-forward, but the tannins are there, hiding behind the well-disguised alcohol. I've yet to drink one at any age that seemed like it had budged at all from its precocious youth. This one seems a bit different in that the tannins aren't hiding, but at the same time, it also doesn't feel like it's evolved in any substantial way over the past decade. I'm leaving this as a reminder to myself to let the last bottle sit for a very long time, as a test....

November 24, 2019 - Slowly ox'ed for three hours then consumed over the next three. Lovely bottle still displaying energy and style.
