February 20, 2016 - Almaúnica Quatro Castas Vertical - 2010, 2011, and 2012.: This was the first (but not the last) disappointment of the night. This bottle was only slightly better than the ones we had in the past that fscov thought had been affected by heat. The blend was dominated by Syrah, and it showed in the nose and mouth. However, it was too hot and unbalanced. Its alcohol dominated everything else. Oak seems to have killed this bottle. For a "Super Premium", one would suppose it would last more than six years (three since release). 86-87pts.

August 29, 2015 - Drank two bottles with fscov, so his notes are applicable. And to say this was a major disappointment is a bit of an understatement! In the nose, one could anticipate that something was not in its proper place - although dark berries, black currant and a bit of oak were perceptible, one could see there was a lot of alcohol in the background.

In the mouth, the first bottle drank like $5 syrah, and the second one was a little bit better - muted fruit, short finish, lots and lots of heat - totally unbalanced, with the alcohol way too prominent - and tongue-drying tannins. The first bottle went down the sink, but we got little pleasure out of the second one too.

There is a chance these bottles were not properly stored, and this might explain the dreadful performance of this wine today. However, I wouldn't wait if I had a few ones in my cellar - I would open at least one to see if this wine is not already on its last legs.

I had the 2012 Almaunica a few months ago at the winery - granted, this vintage was made using a different mix of grapes - and it was WAY better. I bought there a 2011 and a 2012 which will be drank sooner than later.

I will not rate this wine, but its current grade here at CT seems to be too generous IMHO.
