August 23, 2019 - Tasted blind. Light golden. Complex aroma. Mushroom, sea, beeswax. Mature on the palate, great concentration, long and tight. Very good.

July 20, 2019 - No formal note. Lovely crisp and fresh Grüner Veltliner from this top producer. Maybe my recent exposure to some Keller Rieslings influences my score...

May 16, 2015 - At the moment rather bland. Some Gruner character but sulky and subdued. Hopefully better with age but a bit disappointing at present.

October 8, 2013 - Fermented with natural yeasts and aged in old 2500 liter oak casks.

Deep, concentrated emerald green color; one of the most concentrated green-tinted colors I've ever seen in a white wine. The expressive nose is at least as intense as the appearance with powerful aromas of aromatic green herbs, fresh pear, wet stone minerality, complex exotic spices, some underlying tropical fruits and even a touch of darker, red-toned fruits. The wine feels very ripe, concentrated and expressive on the palate, and even though the wine is really mouth-fillingly full-bodied and textural, even heavy, it doesn't feel dull or flabby. On the contrary, due to the racy and bright acidity, the wine feels remarkable balanced and structured with tremendous intensity. There are rich, opulent flavors of ripe pineapple, papaya, fresh pear, apricots, some vague spiciness, a little cream and a slightest hint of herbaceous greenness. The fruit department takes a small step back in the very long, strong and intense finish, leaving the stage for white peppery spice, herbal green notes, some stony minerality and a hint of smoke. However, a ripe backdrop of mirabelle plums, citrus fruits and almost unripe pear lingers on for minutes.

Although Schloss Gobelsburg's Steinsetz is one of the most impressive whites I've had, this wine makes it feel rather small and mundane in comparison. This is remarkably huge, concentrated and monolithic for a white wine, yet never feeling too heavy, flabby or overdone. The power and the balance here is simply stunning. Even though I've never been a fan of the blockbuster style, this is hands down one of the best whites I've ever had. Tremendous aging potential, no need to open one for the next 10 or so years. Really great value at 34,28€.
