May 15, 2019 - Decanted for several hours and consumed over three nights. Rating is somewhere in the mid-eighties. Too boring to really think about it.

May 4, 2019 - Opened and allowed to slow ox for about 45 minutes. Deep plum color. Aromatically presents white pepper, smoked meats, black fruits, iron notes, a faint whiff of iodine, and garrigue. Tannins are fully integrated, with a slight dryness on the finish. Good lift to the acidity, though I think the vibrancy is on a slow decline. The palate is concentrated with black fruits, iron, smoked meats, and scorched earth. A nice subtle extended finish with the iron and incense notes coating the palate. Palate staining. Day 1 Score 92

Day 2 - Half the bottle stored overnight in the refrigerator. Black fruits are more aromatic and prominent on the palate and the acidity has more zest this evening. Day 2 Score 91

    Drink now through 2025.

April 26, 2019 - Meh, it was fine. No iron or any other discerning qualities of northern rhone. Very generic. Not a rebuy.

April 21, 2019 - This was, IMO, fairly modernist, as Guigal can be, ripe, plummy, and rather simple for the appellation/price/renown. Granted, it's the AOC bottling, not a lieu-dit, so perhaps too much to expect more character. Good, for sure, but I don't find layers and layers of flavors. Tannins have melted away, maybe even a bit too much, or maybe just smoothed over by oak treatment. There's a little smoke here, and it's a really stunning dark purple, but not as savory as, say, an Alturas from Halcon, or anything from the Jemrose vineyard, or DTR's better bottles. Nowhere near the league of a La Chappelle from Jaboulet I had a few years ago, so maybe I just need to stay away from the Guigal and appellation-wide bottlings. Which means I'm going to be passing on Hermitage, save for the remaining bottles of this maker I am already sitting on. N. Rhone is just getting too dear, for the most part.

January 1, 2019 - Decanted for around 5 or 6 hours. Bright blackberry smell, smoke and cinnamon and some menthol. Deep, rich, lush fruit in the mouth with something meaty or fatty. Full bodied. Doesn't veer into syrupy, with enough acid and still powerful tannins. Very silky and polished. Long savoury finish. Splendid. Will last longer.
