December 4, 2019 - Sensational Pinot! Nose of cherries and red berries is very inviting. The palate opens strongly with a ripe melange of red plums, raspberries, cherries together with some spices. This is maintained through the mid and back palate finishing fruity and clean with a good level of acidity. I notice during decanting the tannin deposit is significant for a Pinot but quite fine. I suspect very good winemaking here with perfectly ripe fruit and some proportion of whole bunch pressing. The result is marvellous at this age due to screwcap closure. Totally impressive and enjoyable.

April 20, 2015 - I see my last note of 2011 said this was nearing its peak. So it is fitting that I drank my last bottle alongside three other oldish NZ wines to see how well they age. Opened 90 minutes before drinking, it was fully opened, no tannins remaining but still good fruit. My notes suggest the last bottle was better back in 2011, but nevertheless this has held up well and was an interesting experience to drink.

March 27, 2015 - {screwcap, 14%} Garnet, but clearly aging, with that browning transluscence that gives it away. Nose is a mixture of sweet aging strawberry fruits and tobacco/pastrami notes. The palate is nearly deviod of tannins now, attractively flavoured, with medium acid, and near-medium weight, but despite its very pleasant drinking qualities, the vibracy of youth has faded without really making way for the complexity of old age. This leaves it, if not exactly hollow, just somehow faintly disappointing, in that you expect a bloom of something wonderful after your mouthful of wine, and then it never materialises. So near and yet, so far. Better at 5 years than ten, then, probably; that's the rule here.

December 2009 (link)(Craggy Range Pinot Noir Te Muna Road Vineyard, Martinborough, New Zealand) This New Zealand Pinot is bright, alive, and long. The nose is a bit muted, showing notes of white cherry, tart strawberry, light chocolate, dusty mushroom, and coppery earth. The palate is much more giving, with tangy and zesty red-fruit skins, moderately high complexity, and tannins from aging in 35%-new French oak. A great balance of true Pinot Noir.
