Community Tasting Notes 10

January 29, 2013 - First glass, pop/pour, not very appealing. Second half of the bottle, after being open an hour: Dark in color with very slight bricking at the edges. On the nose, dark fruit, a sweet version of tar and oak. Brooding / masculine. More of the same on the palate, where the tar is perhaps a bit more noticeable. Tannins remain relatively prominent.

January 18, 2011 - Drinking very nicely. Relatively rich, with a smooth oak supporting nicely balanced fruit. Fairly "dark" and brooding on the palate without being over the top. No rough edges, no need to wait on drinking this one. Update: after 45 minutes in the glass, out of nowhere comes a distinct green pepper note on both nose and palate. Not enough to turn this wine "green" as there's enough other stuff going on. But enough to knock down my score a couple of points. Still a nice wine for the price, and to be honest, if I was expecting the green pepper (ala some South Africa stuff) it probably wouldn't have been so distracting. I have a feeling that this may yet morph again before the bottle is gone. 90+ points early on.

Update: I was wrong, this bottle didn't further morph, at least not in any good direction. Green peppers become ever stronger the longer it's open. Absolute crap, and down the drain, on Day 2. "Pop and guzzle" seems to be the plan with this one.

January 14, 2011 - deep rich color. Nose: fruit (black berry, plum). Palate: fruit, leather. tobacco, oak. Still drinking well.
