Community Tasting Notes 15

April 18, 2022 - The first point of note is the gorgeous ruby-brick red hue. No yolk was apparent despite its age, though that might have been a function of dim lighting. The nose is dominated by spicy garrigue with a background of stewed plum. The fruit takes pride of place on the palate, where it blends well with a restrained acidity and a background of anise and sage. The finish has a subtle sweetness reminiscent of bahri date, with well-integrated but raspy tannins; this wine will likely continue to improve for five years or so.

October 25, 2020 - It's nice to find a little gem like this in the cellar. I bought this for $20+ as a "mystery" wine six years ago and it's slumbered since. It's in a nice spot, all integrated, typical for Grenache-driven SoRo, kirsch, garrigue, spice, and red fruits (was there a touch of black olive peaking out, too? Hmmm... notes show 10% Syrah, so maybe). This is a big wine but it had good enough energy to carry it with and without food. It does lack a bit in complexity and persistence. Still, lovely. 14.5% abv. And very nice QPR at the "mystery wine" price.

October 24, 2020 - I see I did not write a note for my earlier consumed bottle. Some 3-4 years ago I found this wine disjointed and disappointing. Last night with stuffed pork and after 30 mins of air it was delicious with all parts coming together. Deep color, ample fruit without overpowering, balanced acid, good structure, plush without dominating the food. A lovely exp and could merit 91. Lacking complexity on palate

December 30, 2019 - Dense, dark fruit. Still quite robust. Rustic. Good, but lacks depth and complexity.

August 8, 2018 - After drinking the '12 a week earlier, I was curious if the '11 was showing as poorly. The `11 did not show the oxidation of the `12 with much brighter fruit and a bit more pop. I think a touch higher acid is allowing the wine to age a bit longer. Unfortunately the VA was excessive for my tastes. Being from Paso Robles, the high-ABV and high-VA combo is par for the course for these big wines but was disappointing to find in a Gigondas.
