September 7, 2019 - Branaire Ducru 2006. Fantastic wine! It was an amazing experience. on opening it was austere with high minerality - flint and pencil stents. Orange peel, dark cherries. after 3-4 hours it changed dramatically. On the palate, open, fruity and warm appeal. great wine with potential to a few more years of cellaring. 92/100

November 19, 2018 - Popped and poured then had a taste. Darker garnet color. Nose of cassis, red currant, cedar, plum blossom, earth. Red currant again on the tongue cut with blueberry, blackberry, and a bit of coffee. Elegant, balanced, and slightly restrained attack. Moderate acidity and firm tannin. Longer finish of red and black plum with slow grip. Very good now, with definite upside.

November 2, 2018 - Steak & claret, it doesn’t get much better! The 06 has hit a nice window in its the evolution. Showing beautiful St. Julien softness & elegance.

The nose reveals dark currants & cassis. Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, plum, blueberries, strawberries and creamy black raspberries. Black cherry cola, forest floor, limestone minerals, dry stones, mint, cedar, graphite, leather, tobacco leaf with dark fresh florals and bright violets.

The body is round, lush and full. The tannins are round, tarry, soft and ripe. The tension is just starting to relax. The structure still solid. The length & balance coming into its own. Lots of dark currants & cassis. Ripe; blackberries, bright dark cherries, plum, blueberries, strawberries and creamy black raspberries. Black cherry cola, red licorice, dark, damp forest floor, limestone, sandy dry soil, dry clay, minerals, dry stones, mint, Provence herbaceous notes, dark spice, good penetrating cedar plank, plenty of graphite, leather, tobacco leaf with dark fresh florals and bright violets. The acidity is magnificent. The long finish is ripe, elegance, evenly balanced fruit & earth and lasts minutes. Very good steak wine.

(Chateau Branaire-Ducru (St Julien)) A dark, intense, rather meaty style on the nose, perfumed too, rich and characterful. Slightly high-toned and expressive, this is intriguing and fresh. In the same vein the palate is supple and bright, the substance broad and yet lifted by the underlying tannic grip, the fresh core of acidity and most of all the perfumed, dark and gritty fruits. This is a very impressive wine both for the chateau and the vintage. Well done Branaire!

(Chateau Branaire-Ducru St Julien) On the nose this has a chalky, stony, mineral edged fruit style which I think I have noticed from Branaire in a small handful of recent vintages now. Full, rather perfumed, nice ripe tannins, and a chalky, stony edge rather like that on the nose. Decent texture and weight. Branaire seems to be ranking among the better wines St Julien more and more these days. This is not a patch on the 2005 - but no surprises there.
