May 22, 2019 - Better than I remember. Complex sous bois on the nose, sweet - and persistent - fruit on the palate. Don't know what more one could want from 20yr old Savigny les Beaune. This bottle could last for years- but I don't know that my prior bottles would have fared the same (fuzzy memory; hard to judge)
March 2, 2014 - For a second time this week, I found a bottle that was not in my Cellar Tracker, which never happens--it's like a little mini-Christmas. Or a clear sign of early-onset Alzheimer's--I guess that is for someone else to decide. As for the wine, there was quite a bit of funk here, and just a hint of fruit. Still, well, it was a Burgundy. Very Good. thedrunkencyclist.com
November 16, 2013 - Mid garnet. Harmonious nose hinting at mid red fruit, some sous bois and a touch of earthy spice. Sweet and surprisingly rich mellow fruit on the attack developing to an earthier, slightly feral, animale quality. Mid weight. Positive finish with freshness, more cherries fruit and a moderate length. Very pleasant indeed. ***
February 25, 2013 - Wow, this was truly a nice surprise. I had a couple of these back in 2008 and I was less than whelmed--solid, but nothing more. This bottle was a different story altogether. Great fruit upfront, especially given the age, followed by depth and complexity that you expect at wines double the price. I have not had nearly enough red Burgundy recently and this wine was a perfect indication of why I need to change that immediately. Outstanding.
January 31, 2008 - Nice Burgundy color. Perhaps approaching brick around the edges of the glass. The nose doesn't knock my socks off, but there is some barnyard that is pleasant enough. In the mouth, this feels a little thin. Sour cherry predominates. A little tannic on the finish with very little length. This is good. I am enjoying it, but I wouldn't place it in the "outstanding" category.
January 27, 2008 - Surprised by the amount of fruit. Some cherry and raspberry and a hint of earth/barnyard. Nice mouthfeel, but not exceptional. Average finish.
January 6, 2008 - Disappointing. Perhaps in a dormant period. A little fruit, but not much. Finish disappointing.
May 15, 2006 - Light-medium cherry color, with slightly paling rim. Sour cherry, rasberry, provencal herbs and minerals on the medium intensity but complex nose. The palate matches the nose, with bittersweet chocolate notes adding complexity. Nice spine of intense fruit balanced by good acidity and some soft tannins. Not a blockbuster, but a well balanced, pleasant wine with plenty of fruit and intriguing mineral and non-fruit characteristics. Good length on the rasberry-mineral finish.
