March 9, 2024 - Thie2005, almost 20 hears old, was a great pairing with grilled Australian lamb loin chops. Fully mature but nowhere close to being over the hill, the Pesquera was made by the late Alejandro Fernandez, whose wines along with Vega Sicilia have been credited for putting the Ribera de Duero region in northern Spain in the international spotlight.

After nearly a two-hour decant, I smelled aromas of coffee and cedar in my glass. On the first sip, it tasted like sweet dark berry fruit. Very balanced and the tannins had softened a lot since the last 2005 I drank. Bottom line: I would be delighted to drink this again over the next 1-2 years -if I had any more in the cellar. Oh well .... on to the 2004s, a SPECTACULAR vintage in Spain,

January 8, 2023 - Ruby with almost no orange hue. Well, the complex scents and flavors of black fruits, forest floor, cedar and flowers are still there, but they lost in intensity in the last years. If not perfectly cellared since release, this should be drunk up in the near term, otherwise - 2025. 5/11/15/7. The best Pesqueras remain the ones from the early to the mid nineties. A sad thing.

September 4, 2022 - dark plum burgundy red, little clarity, brickish hue
Nose: plum, cassis, tobacco, tar, leather, dust, chalk, touch anise, smoke, oak
Pal: plum, cranberries, tobacco, tar, leather, cigar, dust, dust, touch anise, smoke, oak
    Feel: medium, savory, acidic
    Finish: medium
    T8 (could be a 9 w/ nice age elements)

August 19, 2021 - [Tasted Blind] This wine pours medium ruby in the glass. The nose is expressive and somewhat mature showing plum, cassis, raw oak (not fully integrated), celery, and gravel. The palate is medium in acid and medium in tannin showing some oaky tannin and a touch of strawberry on the finish. I didn't detect any American oak so I expected mostly or all French oak, and the plum/cassis aspects combined with a touch of greenness of the profile had me guessing a modern leaning Bordeaux from a vintage like 2004 or 2006. After an initial wrong guess I began to wonder about Spanish Tempranillo (without American Oak) and truned out to be correct. I think this is quite different than the lovely Pesqueras I've had from the mid-90s, and is clearly in a period when they got a little more modern leaning with the very raw tasting oak.

August 17, 2021 - Un peu fanné mais encore en vie.
    Tabac, feuilles, mures et cuir.
Un peu de fruit, un peu de tertiaire
    et des tannins intégrés.
Sur son plateau ou un peu passé.

(Pesquera Tinto) Pesquera Dear Friends, For the weekend send-off, we have a wine that's a return to sanity - it remains at the lowest end of the Spanish pricing spectrum despite year after year of exemplary, traditional expression and competition with upstarts at 2-3 times the price. Pesquera is what it is - classic. This is a wine that has nothing to prove, it essentially competes with itself and that's just fine for Alejandro Fernandez. The magic of this wine comes with time - cellar a few bottles of this Spanish stalwart and you will be rewarded (I am reminded of the Per Se holiday event a few years ago where a blind bottle of 1982 Pesquera Janus was called as the 1982 Lafleur by one of the most knowledgeable Bordeaux palates in the country...amazing and so was the wine - see below for more Lafleur): HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as an example that will continue to evolve with some of the more sensible pricing in Spain We have a terrific price on this wine, about the same as US wholesale: 2005 Pesquera Ribera del Duero Crianza (Tinto) While completely unrelated, the 1982 Janus made me think of this pristine set of magnums.... 1995 Chateau Lafleur 1.5lt (Pomerol) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Spain7764 Bord8794
