June 28, 2019 - Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2016, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): This has always been a very complex wine that demands your attention, and today's bottles were no exception. Burly red fruit with savory spice and so much tannin and earth that some people thought this much too young (my vote), while others thought it advanced (not so much). This is so powerful without being a powerhouse, and I expect will reward lots more cellar time. At least that is my plan for the two bottles resting in my cellar. 93 points based on today's assessment, but I think the wine is substantively even better.

March 23, 2019 - FWE Gala. 3rd bottle from owc of 6. More backwards and less to offer aromatically than 2000, but greater depth and persistence on the palate. Darker fruited. Prefer 2002 by a touch but it's close. (17768 of 19789)

October 20, 2018 - 2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Medium expressive nose displaying sweet black fruit, blackberry candy, black cherry, licorice, caramel. a hint of stem, rose, Vosne spice, Tiequayin tea, Chinese medicine and earth. There is a hint of oxidative note that I associate with the 01 reds. Fully integrated palate, subtle sweet black fruit, silky and polished, medium acidity, medium mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a medium to long sweet black fruit driven finish. Not terribly expressive.

October 10, 2018 - Starts with that characteristic 01 DRC spice, stem, and floral nose. A hint of underlying game and meat. Tart red fruit and sour plum on the nose and palate. This is much more open than another bottle from a few months ago. Just beginning to enter a drinking period I believe.

October 6, 2018 - A gift of a dinner for Joao's 40th (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): #05958. A majestic wine. We opened and left it to rest for a good hour as it felt it needed its time to open up. And once it hit its stride it delivered an effortless performance, a lesson in a way n why this wine is considered to be among the best ever made.
Mixed spice on the nose, light cinnamon. Dark side to the fruit with a smoky almost roast meat edge. Elegant vibrant and really just effortless beauty. We can go on and on here but really this could well be a perfect wine. Being a La Tâche though the bar is higher hence "only" a 99 from us and what an experience.

(Romanée-Conti La Tâche) Once more medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is surprisingly subdued, powdery red fruits, but after 15 minutes still didn't get going. On the palate reminiscent of how the Romanée Conti showed in London, understated but very pure. Despite wonderful depth, very reserved indeed. No La Tâche fireworks this time, but impeccably balanced and very long.

(Romanée-Conti La Tâche) A funny wine, in a large glass on the serving table this looked the lightest wine on display, whereas take a modest serving in a tasting glass and it looks altogether darker. The nose is La Tâche - dense, heavy laden branches of red cherries and raspberries, then a little cedar and blood-orange too. Then the nose closes down for a while only to return with tar and mint. Not as incredibly changing as the 2000 at the same stage last year, but like I said - it's still La Tâche. In the mouth it's much more explosive than the Richebourg with a super finish that's carried on by a wave of perfect acidity. If anything, these are the grainiest tannins of all the wines - but then it's all relative!
