January 9, 2013 - Some serious barnyard funk when this opened, but it blew off pretty quickly. Extremely mild cloudiness, relatively rich garnet, without approaching inky. Initially lots of licorice (black candy, of the inexpensive variety), green peppercorns, acetone. Smells like it's going to be pretty hot, despite a 12% ABV. Things smooth out after it's open for a little bit, developing a marvelous candied violet aroma with some cocoa and ... I don't know how better to describe it than this: This wine smells like Cabernet Franc more than any wine I've had before. It tastes more like Cabernet Franc than any Cabernet Franc I've had before either. Just astoundingly good. Slight bit of carbonation that disappears rather rapidly after opening. Absurd levels of acid make this marvelous with food. I can't decide if this is a wine that could last forever or that will quickly decay. It has a great formula of low alcohol and high acidity while retaining some fruit, but there's no real tannic structure per se. Whatever, I ramble on -- this is a fantastic wine that is absurdly food friendly and so revealing of terroir and varietal. The strongest counterpoint I've seen to the entire notion of "natural" wine being hogwash, almost (but not quite) enough to make me a believer.
