December 18, 2023 - @ Crownshy NYC. This showed weaker and more diluted than the same bottle a year ago and was probably more representative of the 2011s. More fruity than earthy on the nose, became quite spicy over the course of 2 hours. Lacks some of the earthy backbone that defines CdlR in finer vintages. 2 more left to go and curious how this evolves, but doubtful it improves much from here.
February 1, 2023 - Opened and left to stand for ~2-hrs before serving. Attractive florals of violets, some spice & smoke. The palate was not exactly showing/showy though, somewhat firm, and reticent even... but the underlying quality (fruit concentration, texture) is evident. This will one day blossom, just like its '01 sibling did on this same evening...
December 2, 2022 - @ Noreetuh NYC. Haunting earthy nose that can only come from truly hallowed terroirs. Bright cherries on the palate, echoing finish. Soulful and a thinker’s wine.
December 5, 2021 - SLDS Decadence 2021: Redcurrant, graphite and mineral notes on the nose. Quite firm on the palate, but the red fruit does give it just enough generosity. The litheness probably reflects the vintage, though it didn't shine even among other (very high quality) 2011s in this flight.
May 15, 2021 - One of my best 2011. Just a tiny hint of edgy- and greenness, otherwise dark fruit and spices, full throttle concentration.
January 24, 2020 - Very nice bottle. A weaker nose with hints of red fruits, Christmas spices and liquorice. Clos de la Roche structure is still evident despite a difficult vintage. A bit thin on the palate, with racy acidity and a very approachable mouth feel. Tannins are very well integrated, a bit short on the palate.
May 15, 2019 - Acker 2019/05 (Zuma): Fantastic clarity and backward finesse with huge acidity to age. The stretch is quite balanced with vintage greeness. 95
February 24, 2019 - Popped and poured. "Grown up" quite a bit since I last had this 2-yrs ago. This still had a little bit of the candied cherry/spice nose, albeit it wasn't showing as exuberant as it did 2-yrs back. Still very red-fruit driven, but again, a tad more structured & "well-toned" than I recalled it to be. Finished long & fresh! I wonder how long it'll be, before secondary/tertiary notes start to show? Anyway, this should get more interesting and complex with more bottle age!
February 24, 2019 - Theme: Burgundy (Summer Pavilion @ Ritz Carlton): Popped at 7pm and serving at around 10pm. Single blind.
Another pretty young wine but more accessible than the 2013 Bonnes Mares. At this point, I stopped taking note and enjoying the sip and conversation. I have had this bottle once and it was lovely, loaded with lush fruits and layer of complexity. Today pretty much the same, but a tad more restraint and less pretty, as I have detectly a touch of green note on the nose.
February 12, 2019 - 2011 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche vv
this vintage just keeps getting better and better. I don't think wines from 2011 will make old bones, but that does not really detract from the quality the top echelon wines have. Gorgeous wine, so light on it's feet, but intense with the iconic Peacock's tail at the end. We decided that if you wanted to show a Burgundy new-comer the heights that this region can achieve, this bottle would be a pretty good place to start. No doubt about it, this wine displays all the characteristics that make this region both incredible and unique.
I cannot believe how much this wine has changed (for the better) in the past twelve months!!! 97pts drink: now-2030.
