February 21, 2024 - Gorgeous wine. Perfectly balanced and structured.

December 2, 2023 - A savoury and meaty pinot that has grunts but perhaps not as charming as one would like.

Still a lovely deep red, certainly on the funky and meaty side on the nose with hints of dried herbs, wet stone and smokiness. Body is still fresh but lumpy - mushroom floor, tobacco and perhaps a bit of fruit somewhere. Not a definition of elegance but very drinkable all the same. Nice weight and a fine finish.

    Drink now to 6+ years.

June 4, 2022 - Fantastic wine plenty of body that has just got better with age

  • Romz Likes this wine: 91 points

April 20, 2022 - Stewed cherries, very ripe currants with dry tea leaves. Soft acidity & resolved tannins providing supple weight on the palate. Smooth and plenty of berries on the finish. So ready to drink now!

February 26, 2022 - 2012 v 2013 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir (Wellington, NZ): Drunk over three evenings from Zalto Denk'Art Burgundy stem, it became a little leaner, and the acids a touch more prominent, on the third evening. Under screwcap. A major colour difference with the 2013, the 2012 garnet with ochre highlights. On opening, on the nose, some funky, animale notes, that receded over the first couple of hours, without ever totally disappearing. Then sous bois, wet bramble, bonfire smoke, beef stew, brown spices and freshly cut and dried herbs. The herbal notes – including some green herbs – were the main difference with the bouquet of the 2013. On palate, much more evolved than the 2013, but pleasantly evolved. Satisfyingly savoury with tobacco leaf, wet dark soil, garrigue and rocky minerals. A little soy umami. Refreshing, racy acidity. Leaner than the 2013 but the 2012 seems to have put on some weight in the last few years. Accompanies food well. At 10 years of age, the 2012 has come together nicely and is in its optimal drinking window, I believe. Drink from now until 2028+.
