January 30, 2013 - A single vineyard blend of Pinot Gris (50%) and Riesling (50%).

Youthful pale green color. Quite expressive nose showing varietal aromas from both the varieties in quite equal fashion: there are powerful spicy notes and exotic fruits from the Pinot Gris, but also notes of citrus peel, lime, some honey and a slightest touch of mineral petrol notes of Riesling as well. On the palate the wine is bone-dry and quite austere yet surprisingly full-bodied and concentrated. There are youthful, tightly wound flavors of tart citrus fruits, white pepper, some apricot and hints of bitter, chalky minerality. Even though the wine feels full-bodied and somewhat weighty, it also feels very focused and surprisingly light due to its bracing acidity - it is almost like a dry, young Riesling but with the breadth and gravitas of a ripe Pinot Gris. The fresh and intense finish is more Riesling-dominated with pithy lemon flavors, notes of bitter herbs and minerals and a hint of steel.

This is an incredibly focused, structured and complex Alsatian blend with intensity, structure and depth that are the hallmarks of the Kreydenweiss style. Needs more age and food. Won't reach peak for some years and will keep for long. You'd never guess this was from the hot vintage of 2009. Tremendous stuff and great value at under 20€.
