Un peu étrange à l'ouverture, assez puissant, il a ensuite développé son venin liégeux... quel dommage! il avait encore du fruit et de la matière.

September 24, 2020 - Housewarming party (Fairfax, VA): Very youthful nose displaying concentrated blue fruit, lead pencil, a hint of ash, cedar, leather and earth. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated blue fruit, unctuous yet silky, medium acidity, earthy mineral, still noticeable tannins and a medium to long concentrated black fruit driven finish with cedar and lead pencil at the end. This bottle is a bit monolithic. Need to revisit soon.

August 29, 2020 - Sixth of 8 bottles of wine consumed over the afternoon and evening with a small group of friends. In my cellar since release. This was my next to last bottle. It was another testament to the power of letting great wine “breathe” even older wine. This was decanted at 3:30pm and tasted mostly from 7:30-9:30pm. When first decanted this was a translucent medium brick garnet, but hours later it had transformed into a bright sparkling medium to dark garnet with little to no bricking that seemed more like a 15 year old wine than a 34 year old. This wine admittedly had some Brett in it, it was enough to be noticeable but not enough to make the wine flawed in my opinion....I like to think of it as rather a “feature”. The nose was earthy with chocolate, leather, mushroom and fennel. Palate showed low to medium acidity and medium tannin. While the palate was nicely complex and layered it was slightly on the lean side. The flavors were mostly secondary and tertiary until it got all the air then the fruit miraculously returned, with mostly red berry oriented in addition to the tea, milk chocolate, savory and earthy layers of flavor. Finish was long but not very explosive. Near the end of its drinking window but certainly a pleasure to drink with a grilled steak.

August 4, 2020 - Nose: Plum, black cherry, muddy earth, graphite, cedar and dark floral. Palate: So many layers it is really impressive now. Creamy plum, bruised strawberry, cherry, dusty earth, slight treacle and anise note. Pop of sweet tobacco in the midpalate. Finish: grippy with dark fruit, cedar, oak and herb notes. Leaves an imprint of the fine and powdery,, but drying tannin.

This bottle was exceptional followed over 6 hours. I have had a few bottles of t j e 86 and this was a very clean example. Sometimes this wine can show cooked fruit, fig and porty notes, but not tonight.
