April 5, 2022 - Sadly this bottle had not been stored well and as a result we couldn’t drink it. There definitely was something good in there at some point but it had clearly been ruined…

April 1, 2022 - Gala Dinner at La Festa del Piemonte (The Pool Restaurant, NYC): [Brought by Jeremy & Anny of Morrell. Double-decanted around 1pm.] Glorious from the get-go. Still opening up. Very long finish of black fruit and spice cake. Classic Giacosa.

October 23, 2021 - From an excellent looking bottle, this wine had a red center and tawny rims. The medium intensity nose showed roses, raisins, tar, brown spices, and some menthol.

In the mouth, this was ripe with great balance, light tannin, firm acidity, and great length. After several hours the tannin became rounded and moderate.

This bottle is going strong and just coming into the zone. It should last 2 decades and may even get a touch better.

October 19, 2011 - My word! Here is a 33 year old white label wine that has the dense, dark look of a barrel sample. I kid you not. This was much less evolved than the '89 Giacosa Barolo we had last weekend. For the first few hours, all it showed was mouthcoating, rich, almost liqueur-like black Nebbiolo fruit before any secondary characteristics came to the surface. Then, the door opens just a crack, showing incipient licorice and florality. You've got to be kidding; this wine seems as though it has been frozen in time and will need another 30 years to reach a point of maturity. Phenomenal and freakish are the only words that come to mind. I hope that some bottles remain at a time when the wine is expessing all of its glory, although I am grateful to have had a chance to try it at this stage.
