July 20, 2018 - Another fun dinner of favorites (Amali in NYC): From a mag. This is a perfect example of why people love Burgundy and when I have an experience like this with the wine I can understand it. It's in that lovely spot where the fruit is fully there and it's wild cherry and lightness and just hints of a more herbal nature. Very pretty wine. Very well balanced. In an almost perfect spot right now. Well enjoyed by the table.

January 14, 2010 - Lac Dujac (Braeburn): Wow—there's more life and vibrancy to this than any '76 I can remember, with an impressive amount of gloss and ripe berry flavor that would have led me to guess it to be much younger than this at first. But there's an underlying savoriness to it that speaks to its aging in bottle, and it finishes with serious length of I-don't-know-what but it sure isn't something fruity. With air it gets more leathery and begins to show its age, as well as turning somewhat inelegantly boxy as you might expect from a '76. But on the basis of its performance when first poured it was certainly one of the highlights of the lineup.

October 9, 2009 - My First Visit To Burgundy: Clavelier, Dujac, Bachelet (Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France): Alec brought this bottle down at the end and said they opened it that morning so it might be a little tired. We initially tried this blind and were asked how old we thought it might be; I think I guessed at least twenty years old, which wasn’t much of a guess because the bottle was covered in dirt and mold. Turned out to be a '76 which was a drought year. You can certainly tell this is an old wine; the nose is explosively earthy with tons of complex aromas such as mushrooms, underbrush, subtle berries, and forest floor. The palate is remarkably fresh with gobs of mineral, earth, cherry, and herb flavors. Amazingly complex with effortless texture from the resolved tannins. Although this is slightly past its prime with the fruit kicking the background, the marvelous texture and complexity provide for a great experience. While not incredibly profound, tasting something like this is all the proof you need that aging wine is a worthwhile endeavor.

July 17, 2006 - A few days in Burgundy; 7/13/2006-7/17/2006 (Cote d'Or): Initially a quite meaty wine showing somewhat fierce tannins. With time wintergreen and roasted earth notes with old cherry and well-integrated flavors, though still a bit hard on the finish. Masculine, with plenty of character. Very nice, but time to drink.
