March 8, 2022 - Bordeaux 2012 - 10 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind. Not decanted. A few observations: 1) 2012 is a good quality vintage without the depth/length of great vintages. Still, one of the better “off-vintages”. 2) Many but not all wines are drinking well today. They are generally open, round and fleshed out. 3) Further cellaring is advised as there are hardly any tertiary aromas yet and that extra complexity will render the wines more interesting. The wines generally have the structure and fruit to age gracefully. 4) The level of ripeness/alcohol are not a concern (09, 10, 15, 18 have more problems in that area). 5) Left bank (avg. 92.2 pts) beats right bank (91.0) (group has right bank a notch ahead). The overall group avg. score is at a good 92.1, but unsurprisingly below past retrospectives of better vintages (00, 09, 10). 6) There are highlights on both sides: my best wines today were Ausone (96 pts), Mouton (96), Cheval (95) and Margaux (95).

TN: Right from the start, this shows impressive. The wine jumps out of the glass and fills the room its seductive aromas. Highly expressive on the nose and palate displaying layer and layers of fine coffee and toasty aromas, fine red berries with additional blue and hints of darker fruit. Some tobacco and minerality notes too. Superb round structure with fine tannins, a perfectly integrated acidity, a creamy yet almost weightless texture, great length. Overall very complete and one of the best left bank wines in 2012. 95+ pts. Chateau Margaux produces great wines and is one of the more consistent Chateaux that produces great wines even in lesser vintages like 2011 (recently rated 96 pts), 2012 (rated 95 pts before) or 2008/2006 (both rated 95 pts). The great thing about Margaux is that it is open, singing and charming usually already from a young age and throughout its lifetime (much like Cheval Blanc on the right bank) and still it has a lot of ageing potential (but of course probably a touch less than Latour or Lafite).

Decanting: Needs no extended decanting, good from the go in this tasting.

Group rank: Shared 3rd out of 33 reds
    Group average score: 95.0

February 7, 2022 - Bordeaux 2012 10 years on tasting: A 2012 Bordeaux vintage horizontal hosted by a private collector. Main observations were: 1/ Left bank beats right bank thanks to Paulliac, St Estèphe and Margaux, 2/ (over-)extraction was a frequent issue, making this a vintage where winemaking decisions and skill mattered, 3/ as such, unsurprisingly, first growths and right bank equivalents clearly outperformed the pack, 4/ highlights were Ausone (97) followed by Cheval Blanc, Mouton, Pichon Lalande (all 96), 5/ the lowlight was an over-extracted Pape Clement (88). Complete ranking and additional observations included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Perfumed with tobacco, espresso, mocha and mild chocolate notes. Also pencil shavings, fine layer of herbs, cigar box, only a bit of leather and earth. Ripe and facetted fruit profile, on balance more red. Palate can’t quite hold up, unfortunately, not entirely harmonious and leaning towards the acidity side. That said, a pretty soft texture and tannins will built in. Light, feminine and highly palatable. This bottle presented itself more settled, refined and in better balance than the previous one about a year ago.

July 5, 2021 - Medium-bodied, structured, almost round, close to soft, but the tannins and the wine remain firm, reserved, and reticent. There is a strong, green olive and herbal note in the finish that does not want to go away. Those looking for more classic-styled vintages will probably like this even more than I did. At the end of the day, and the bottle, this is a wine to like, not love.

April 8, 2020 - Château Margaux Vertical 2003-2015: All wines tasted blind alongside the matching vintage of Sassicaia (see separate tasting story). The quality of the Margauxs transcends through the vintages with exceptional complexity and precision and a soft- and roundness not many left bank wines show that young. Many off-vintages delivered great pleasure (06, 08, 12) but of course the best wines were from the top vintages. Winner again was the 2009 (already won in a top 50 wines from 2009 retrospective last June) thanks to an unbelievable depth and sexiness. The 2015 (hyper pure and singular) and the 2010 (the definition of finesse) are just a tad behind, with the 2005 (like so many 2005s) showing promising but not ready. Average score for the Margauxs at very high 94.8 points (clearly higher than the 92.1 for the Sassicaias, which - no surprise - only beat Margaux in the very weak Bordeaux vintages 2011/2013).

TN: The most floral Margaux tasted. Lots of different flavor aromas, a beautiful fresh perfume and the signature Margaux sexiness with espresso, mocha, cacao, vanilla. Very bright and red fruited. The lighter year shines through but in such a beautiful way. Very fine tannins structure and acidity, very good harmony. This will likely not live as long as many other vintages and I can hardly imagine it to get much better than it is today. Again, given the price, I wouldn‘t put that in my cellar but it‘s beautiful to drink today.

March 7, 2020 - Drunk at The China Club Hong Kong from Magnum - whilst its young and a little closed and served in magnum to boot it's still beautifully balanced. A significantly grander wine than the '03 Calon that it was paired with.
