Community Tasting Notes 9

September 12, 2023 - This is just a post and not tasting notes:

I find it interesting that the CA 2011 vintage was initially described as a bad year for Napa wines. I read a few articles a couple of years ago that perhaps the '11 vintage has turned out to be much better than expected and should be revisited, so I find it very interesting that the initial (earlier) scores on this wine were low and the more recent scores are higher. I still have 2 bottles of this wine. I'll have dig one out and post a real tasting note.

    August 11, 2023 - Decanted for 1 hour.
Aroma: red fruits, dried figs, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, tobacco and graphite.
Palate: red fruits, a tad spicy, bold, balanced acidity, medium tannins with a long finish. Overall, the wine was very balanced and drinkable with or without food. Paired beautifully with corned beef brisket and cabbage. This wine is in its prime drinking window. 92-93

January 27, 2021 - Respectfully, I dissent from the generally low scores. It's impressive for the vintage, I think. I'll admit that maybe I'm a sucker for the coffeehouse flavor profile -- there's a bunch of espresso here. Big and silky in the mouth, but the tannins bite down on the end, in a comforting way. Lots of oily cassis, blueberry, fig newton, and thick "grapeyness" generally. And you definitely notice the thump of alcohol throughout. I guess that's the main takeaway: what it has, it has lots of. Not complex, and not particularly long. Is it worth the price tag? Nope. But it's full-on tasty and stands out from the pack.

December 24, 2020 - Classical Knights Valley Notes. Some cassis and plum mixed with dark chocolate and mocha, and some slight orange zest. Not as rich or complex as other vintages but a very good Napa Cabernet with good freshness nonetheless. Should be enjoyed over the next decade.
