January 31, 2020 - Decanted 6 hours. A very thickly-textured and dense red Burg with wonderful flavors of dark red and blue fruits, violet spice and stony minerals. There is serious structure here and the finish is firm and still tannic. While there is great material here, the wine is just a bit too hard for Burgundy especially Volnay at this point. Try again in the 22nd century...

July 30, 2019 - Surprisingly dark and wound up. Powerful but closed. Black cherry and tight red cherry. Smells hot and feels over oaked right now. The palate is frustratingly tight as well. Not a great deal of aromatic expression. Muscular. After two hours in a decanter there was a bit more expression, but overall too tense. Primary, good berry fruit primary, but without any sense of earth yet.

July 9, 2019 - Perfumy nose of violet spice and wet dead leaves. Quite full with excellent intensity and plenty of acidity supporting the ripe dark cherry and blueberry fruit flavors. Quite grippy and somewhat coarse with a powerful mineral crunch showing up on the finish along with a decayed forest floor funk. Still a bit monolithic at this point and it seems to need tons more time. In fact, and this really never happens, I left it corked in the kitchen for 3 days and it hadn’t lost a thing. Crazy and a Burgundy for my grandkids. 92+

April 11, 2019 - Pure, unforced, ethereal and engaging. Equal parts fruit, mineral, plant matter and earth. Forceful but perfumed, deep and textural. Primary and primal, with just a hint of espresso the only sign of any age. Should live for another 50+ years.

Rockss and Fruit

(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Ducs") Nose was slightly reticent at first but soon opened up with incredibly pristine flavors of red fruits, cherries and minerals. Great depth to the nose. Nuanced and layered but minimalistically stripped down to its essential elements. Just deep fruit and mineral. Great nose. The detail was great. The palate kept getting better and better all night. Concentrated with enormous material and a wealth of the purest fruit you can imagine. Exquisite burst on the finish with wonderful barnyard/mineral/red fruit integration. Tannnins were ripe and sweet but wonderfully restraianed sweet. A great palate. Great wine and will easily go twenty more years. This was great. Did I mention this was great?

Burgundy-Report

(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs) Medium-plus ruby-red with a cherry-red rim. The nose starts broad and brawny, slipping for a moment into bright red berries before settling into a medium intensity mix of sweet coffee inflected red cherry, some higher tones continue to evolve. Almost painful intensity of high-toned fruit - very, very impressive! Good acidity and very good tannins though not so svelte as those in de Montilles' Les Mitans. Great length - a King in waiting - I think the next test shouldn't be before 2012.

(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs) The colour is just a little darker than the 1998. The nose has a little more pronounced blueberry fruit together with the red cherry and a little flowery at the top, smells quite sweet too. Wow ! - What a fruit concentration, this wine is just so fat with a mixture of red and black fruit - really intense. The acidity is good and the tannin smoother than the 1998, but the finish is much, much longer. This wine rates as outstanding !
