Community Tasting Notes 3

January 24, 2012 - Surprisingly good. Excellent nose of spice and classic pinot noir fruit. Flavor profile was remarkably like a Burgundy, with spice and mineral and loads of acid. The only give-away as to its New World origins was a somewhat forward fruitiness. As the evening wore on, a lack of complexity became obvious, but this wine must have been from fairly young vines. The wine showed very youthful, and five to ten more years of life seem conservative. I was surprised by the quality. I'm absolutely willing to try it again if I have a chance.

March 11, 2006 - Medium deep color, tight out of the bottle, with leathery complex flavors built into huge-burgundian style. After an hour or so, the fruit comes to the front and it started to get a little flabby. Overall very good, and actually is age-worthy for another 5-10 years.

March 10, 2006 - Note from the Winemaker via http://www.closdelatech.com - I describe the 2000 as having medium color, a big body with smooth tannins, and a complex bouquet—in which, in addition to the fruit component, I smell “spice,” which comes from eugenol (also known as oil of clove), a natural by-product of Pinot Noir fermentation. The bouquet also has an understated hint of vanillin, an aldehyde that is the active ingredient in vanilla extract. Vanillin is a natural byproduct of the oak-toasting process.
