February 11, 2019 - Sadly I think this bottle had passed. A little stewed, not lively in any way. I don't think this is a reflection on this wine, I think it's just what happens to some bottles after 20 years.

December 21, 2018 - Holiday Dinner - Champ, Burg, Piedmont, Rayas and a ringer, Bordeaux and etc. (Officina - Washington D.C.): IMO, this has to be the biggest scale and the most concentrated Giacosa wine. The color remains impenetrable. Expressive nose displaying rich concentrated black fruit, blackberry, a hint of dry cherry, rose, fruitcake, ink, licorice, caramel, tar, basking spices and strong iron. Incredible concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated slightly dry black fruit, unctuous yet polished, rich, deeply toned and round, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, and a long intense dry black fruit and cherry driven finish with tar and iron at the end. Although this has entered the youthful peak, it remains incredibly young and can easily improve for a few more decades. Truly a tour de force and vin de garde!

December 14, 2018 - N. Rhones and other Treats (RPM Italian): Basically a pop n' pour. This is a near perfect bottle of Barolo. Still very young, but otherwise it has everything you want in Barolo and more. Stunning aromatics of rich red fruit and florals, with emerging saddle, licorice and earth tones. The palate is densely concentrated yet lively and ethereal. So long. A killer wine.

December 14, 2018 - HDH Dec auction trip/dinners at SKY and RPM Italian; 12/13/2018-12/15/2018: Well this was incredible. Just a stunning perfume with an array of flavour that's impossible to catalogue; remarkable clarity and brightness to the dark fruit flavours here, and a lightness of touch that makes it feel almost weightless despite the intensity and persistence of flavour here.

December 14, 2018 - HDH December auction; 12/13/2018-12/15/2018 (Chicago, IL): This was easily one of the best wines of the night, even though I think it could have used lots and lots of air. This had a killer red-fruited perfume, with some gentle earth notes as well. It's a super delicate wine, with this light ethereal quality that somehow packs a very hard punch as well. This doesn't show the intense black fruit and tannin that I'd expect from the vintage, and really does seem to buck the trend a bit. Giacosa was a master, and every bottle is a treasure.
