January 1, 2019 - Last of 36, pnp, damp much travelled cork, ullaged more than 1 cm, previously noted since 92 very good or better but usually fine plus at apogee between 2000 and 2010 - browning garnet, old; nice structure to the bouquet, but all leather and tobacco, some earth, hint of violet and spice; medium, decent length and persistence, fine structure, just lacking fruit flavours though still attractive, better at end of bottle after initial bottle stink had fully blown off, drink up. VGI (17) was F+ 10 years ago....rogue bottle left forgotten in corner of cellar!

January 1, 2019 - The cork dropped while trying to open this wine bought near release and well-cellared.

An initial brimstone nose yet a clear and translucent body of strawberry garnet and little sediment.

Decanted to a light tobacco color and whiff but a persistent off aspect ... the dropped cork told the tale of a very slightly off wine that yet showed the ghost of greatness. Sad!

In all, it is not proper to down rate the wine as its unhappy aspects are plainly due to a bad cork. What might have been!

September 16, 2018 - Old New Castle of the Pope (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. More liqueur-like, with some darker fruit elements here, as well as some hint of oak? I also pick up a slight amount of caramel. The palate here feels fairly modern, but it's well put together -- the fruit is sweet and more jammy than a lot of the other wines. My guess is that this is on the younger side of the lineup. The tannins are also still fairly prominent. My 5th, group's 4th.

June 3, 2018 - Beaucastel (1979-2006) (Skokie, IL): Served double-blind in a Beaucastel lineup. This shows a lot of rust and iron on the nose, to the point where it's almost distracting from some of the other things. Perhaps it's not the soundest of bottles? The palate seems slightly cooked too, with more brown and oxidative flavours than I'd expect. There's still a pretty strong tannic structure here though. (My 5th, group's 10th.)

April 28, 2018 - Gorgeous bottle of wine...in my cellar since release, it was decanted at 4pm and tasted through about 9pm. It was a translucent medium ruby with brick edge. The nose is earthy with leather, chocolate, lavender, spice and black fruit and probably a light amount of brett. The palate was rich and chewy with tart blackberry, boysenberry, chocolate, espresso and black cherry. The mouth feel is rich and luscious. The finish is very long earthy, woodsy and with a distinct chocolate and smoked bacon aftertaste. Very complex and layered throughout. Delicious!

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) Only just the palest wine of the flight, with a red-mahogany hue. Despite this, again the nose is loaded with lush, leafy fruit. There are nuances of ink, game and rubber. Nevertheless the fruit is fading from the palate, which has more gamy and leathery secondary characteristics. A nicely structured wine, with a velvety texture and correct supporting acidity. The tannins have all but disappeared, just showing a little on the finish, together with a tiny flourish of sweet fruit. Quite a length.
