November 24, 2020 - Coravin fun - Talbot (My place, Kent Street): Historic signs of weeping. Coravin did not want to play with this - cork immediately decided to start descending into the bottle so I took the Durand to it.
Aromas of old wine; volatility, leather, cigar box, red currant and cranberry...it's all a bit tired, slightly dried bramble and blackcurrant, a little cream and earth as well, with time tasty notes. On the palate there is that volatility, beef and yeast extract, barely discernible tannins, a little warmth and a sense of breadth and presence on the finish that is oddly pleasing.
Had this later and it showed more fruit but, over time, descended to its death. -

April 9, 2020 - Many years ago, I was not a fan of 1976 as a vintage, as it almost always suffered in comparison to those preceeding and following (the days of $20 1970's!). The opportunity to purchase well cellared examples at the right price came along, and here we are. I enjoyed th 1976 GL last month so time to try the Talbot. Cordier wines were made with a rustic touch at the time, and this usually provides longevity at the expense of finesse. Not this time. The classic hot stewed fruit flavours that were present early are now stewed roasted prunes. Colour is good, let’s see how day2 goes.
Day 2 and it’s improved but not for everyone. The fruit is still prune and cassis but with a touch of menthol, tomato leaf (again!) and cedar. This is not a crowd pleaser, but I seem to have almost finished the bottle. Needs protein.1 person found this helpful Comments (1) -

May 5, 2018 - Alex's Birthday Party (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): From a double magnum, Alex's birth year, bright, light red coloration in the glass with hints of bricking, nose of shitake mushroom, earth, black cherry pie, nose shows its age, more of the same on the palate, no acid, not tart but fairly rich fruit, mouth filling fruit, almost elegant, easy too sip and savor if you like old Bordeaux, and a long, flavorful finish.

April 19, 1991 - Carmine. Expressive bouquet with alcohol and oak. Also a bit earthy. Juicy fruit. Hint of sweetness, also a bit of liquorice. Although fairly light bodied the wine is complex and very pleasurable.
