February 15, 2019 - Barolo Ginestra: One of the disappointments of the tasting. Bouquet was quite lactic and it missed vibrancy. On the palate it was rather one dimensional with quite developed tannins.
    Probably a not perfect bottle.

February 10, 2019 - OMG is this good. This is in a perfect place right now with sweet tobacco and dark plum and cedar notes on the nose and palate. Cleverly put together, the texture is so smooth it glides in your mouth. Long finish. Great wine.

November 12, 2018 - Smooth palate with dry dark cherry, wet rocks, dark soil tones and licorice. Needs time. 92+

April 20, 2018 - Opened for my wife's relatives for dinner. This was a wine non-serious wine drinkers wanted a third glass of. Fantastic Barolo. We didn't have time to decant much, I poured everyone a small glass and the rest went into the decanter. Initially a bit tannic, it smoothed out substantially in a couple hours. I planned to hold out all night to see how it evolved and leave some for tomorrow but it was just too good. My glass was stolen by someone else and I stole another person's glass to get another sip.

I'm no Barolo expert, but this had lots of red fruit, which seems to be Aldo Conterno's style. A great deal of elegance, and complexity developing over time, with floral notes, leather, oak, vanilla. I initially thought it was not as complex as I hoped but it just took time. I don't have the vocabulary to describe all the facets of non-Cabernets, but this was truly a special wine. Definitely a step above the 2000 Cicala and 2000 Colonello which are also hot year wines. I plan to buy another to try in the future, say 5 to 10 years out.

This seems to be in it's drinking window and will presumably last a while but given that the tannins seem to resolve with a couple hours, I'm not sure how long it will last. Do people expect the more modern style of Barolos to last 50 years? I'd bet that 1997 will not be as long lived as more acidic and tannic vintages like 1999 but it sure tastes great now!
