December 31, 2018 - The good news: this bottle was better than the bottle from six years ago. The bad news: it’s no longer the gorgeous, monumental champagne it was at age 20.

Golden color; almost like a still wine, but it has a superfine, persistent, but weak bead. I noticed that my note ten years ago indicated that same thing, but that it still generated a fine thin mousse. Not anymore. Aromas of golden apple, toast, orange peel, and apricot almond, with a mature note of Madeira. Rich and foamy in the mouth, it seems more vigorous than it looked. Toasty citrusy flavors are forward, with baked apple bring up the finish.

Still lovely, but it’s on the downslope. Can’t hold that against a 30-year-old wine, though. It’s a treat, and I’m glad my last bottle made such a nice showing.

October 14, 2018 - The best 88 Champagnes from 1988 Part 3/3 Prestige Cuvees from Magnum (L'assiette champenois): From Jero, not blindly

White peach, Brioche and finely burned caramell. Very concentrated and dense. Great acidity structure and again from this bottle size ages too Young. Still a Baby. Sublime champagne 98(100)

September 21, 2018 - From jero. While perhaps lacking complexity, full and rounded with just enough depth to be interesting.

August 5, 2018 - Some more Cappellano at Nico Osteria (Chicago, IL): I looked at psmith with a raised eyebrow. "No, it's not corked," he said, predicting my question. Honestly, all of psmith's old champagnes are corked to me. I swear he puts TCA in them before he opens them for me or something. More to the point, there's something on the nose here that evokes old library books. There are some notes of madeira here too (not in a bad way) -- nuts, dried fruits, brown spice. Definitely on the old side to me. However, the palate still shows plenty of verve, with a definite fizz and acidity that evokes some tart stone fruit. Good, once you get past the library books. Maybe fresher bottles of this would be better -- this bottle was long in the tooth.

August 5, 2018 - I haven't had this wine in the better part of a decade, but back then I used to think it one of the best Champagnes I'd ever had. This bottle didn't live up to that memory. A touch of old Champagne funk on the nose. There's still a great citric streak, and a ton of weight and a savory, darker pinot-inflected character. It's almost more liqueur at this stage, but overall it's faded and just doesn't have quite enough lift or continuity to it. Too bad.

(Pol Roger "Cuvee Winston Churchill") I have not had this bottling in a long time . . .maybe three years . . .and it showed brilliantly. Elegant would be the perfect word to describe this wine. It floated across your palate and deposits saline, apples and concentrated high-toned citrus fruits that seem to go all the way to the back of your throat. Really cuts deep. Gets very sappy with air but still retains its profound elegance. Haunting ethereal stuff and really has improved dramatically since I have had it last time. Still got loads of time before this is peaking.
