Community Tasting Notes 6

April 2, 2006 - Very nice and in no danger of falling of a cliff in the next year or two. That said, I don't see much improvement so I vote for drink up. It still has the showcase fruity nose, wonderful mouthfeel and the oak has integrated fully. The wine isn't nearly as lively as it was a couple of years ago but the nose is richer and even more interesting.

June 17, 2005 - Luscious notes of tropical fruits, lemons, pears and toasty hard candy. A little bit thin in the mouth, but I still like the intensity of the fruit throughout. Medium finish of toasty syrupy lemon and a hint of butter scotch. And smoke, I've found the Red Shoulder to have a signature characteristic of smoke. It does finish a little bit tart at the end. I'm not worried about this wine dying anytime soon, I've been tasting the Red Shoulder from it's first vintage and it has outlasted everyone's expectations (including Doug Shafer's when I asked him about it several years ago).

March 14, 2005 - At the Shafer Hillside Select dinner at Manresa. Seemed to be almost like an aged White Burgundy. Had that kind of toasty flavors going on that the English seem to like. Drink the rest of these up.

March 13, 2005 - Shafer Hillside Select Dinner (Manresa Restaurant, Los Gatos, California USA): Medium gold color, light dusty nose. Palate was medium body, but flabby and not enough acidity; downhill alert.

March 1, 2004 - This wine has come around in the past 6 month. Luscious nose of fig and pear, the mouthfeel is expansive from start to finish. Seemed too oaked last tasting, but the oak/vanillin seems to be blending into the wine very nicely now.
