April 24, 2021 - Nose of orange Sencha, white plumeria flower, a touch of black pepper in the front of the nose and punch ! Palate as the nose would have you expect, some burnt molasses, concentrated fruit drop and slightly bitter in the length and hence a bit too reminiscent of its younger brother, but of course on a much higher, refined and ethereal level. Floral orange punch is probably the dominating catch phrase here and the nose is the best thing about this drink. Good, but for me not worth the cost. Nose: 95, Palate: 89

October 20, 2018 - Sweetish, full and smooth. Raisins, plum, chocolate, molasses and mushroom flavours, with good length. More elegant and much longer than the regular Cardenal Mendoza. Worth the markup.

    March 26, 2015 - syruplike

    almost syruplike:
prunes, figs, raisins, dried stone fruits, bombastic sherry nose and flavour - you don't have to put your trunk into the nosing glass it's already there..

..CASK taste that somehow reminds me of sailing ships and inspires you to travel faraway places -
mocca with sweet caramel/condensed milk, shisha tobacco, spice, molasses (although brandy is not made out of sugar cane like rum), walnuts, bitter orange peel, dried stone fruit, bitter chocolate, dominant bitter chocolate taste

not too smooth - there are some "corners" but all in all a good balance between fruit, oak, mature flavours and alcohol.
fantastic deep opulent nose and tasty mid palate but unfortunately not really persistent..anyway, fantastic drop!

    September 2, 2013 - from a purchased sample

Nose: Oh, yes! For the Spanish brandy lovers in all of us, this starts out in excellent territory. Brown syrup and grape molasses with a pinch of salt and some nuttiness, and a wedge of copper penny (it's not metallic; I'm sensitive to that - it's more an oxidized note). Chocolate, dark and dense grapiness, prune, and a present and dense sweetness that's perfectly in check for this sort of thing. Dried unsweetened figs. Delicious and rather (for a Spanish brandy) graceful.

Palate: Virtually all the notes on the nose come out here in a single point, and then they wash over in a few waves. Surprisingly, this is medium weight in the mouth, and it's darker than the nose - almost some faint Turkish coffee in there as well. And dark chocolate flecks, but the rest is the same, and all rather silky and seamless.

Finish: Goes on for a while with all the same flavors and richness. You can't help but smack your lips for it. Some sweetness, and it's superbly balanced with the darker and less sweet elements. Fantastic stuff.
