Community Tasting Notes 9

October 23, 2023 - I waited another 10 years to drink this after a disappointing start. I have always liked old Evening Land so I bought this on release at the exorbitant price of $120 assuming it was something special. It wasn’t. Too lean, too grassy, herbal, no fruit. Shoved it to the back of the cellar to wait.
Just opened it tonight. 30 minute decant. Clear red with orange lights. Started with red berry fruit and herbal notes. This tastes like it had 100% stem inclusion during fermentation with all the tannin, herbal flavors, but this has gotten better over the years. Right now, it is decent drinking with food, but it would be better with less herb and more fruit. The ten year wait certainly improved it and I think it will get better with a bit more time, but it will never be a really enjoyable wine.

November 28, 2022 - PnP, consumed over 3 hours. Appearance: Clear, medium garnet with noticeable edge bricking - definitely showing all of it's 11 years. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity with developed aromas of dried cherry, strawberry, pine needles, forest floor, and leather along with notes of Asian spice, and charred wood - upon opening nose was dominated by cooked red fruit which subsided over the 2-3 hour tasting period. Palate: Dry, medium acid, tannins are soft and well integrated - medium-, medium+ body, medium+ intensity, 13.2% abv with flavors of strawberry, dried cherry, soy and pine needles with a medium+ finish.

Upon opening my sense was this was past it's prime with dried and cooked red fruit dominating the nose and palate, but a couple hours in and the fruit transformed into more ripe and dried characteristics and green - pine and stem - notes appeared to balance the fruit nicely, with a nice acidic backbone persisting throughout the tasting period. Three hours in this is drinking wonderfully showing great balance and complexity with solid intensity and length. There's still a little life left in this 11 year old Sonoma Coast Pinot - drink now or over next 2 years.

November 5, 2020 - Very nice fully mature pinot. Raspberry and earth flavors, good acidity. Nice finish.

September 4, 2019 - Drinking well now on PnP.
    Earthy, spice, dried berry.
Touch of acidity on the finish, yet well balanced.
This went down fast and paired well with a pork loin porterhouse chop.
Better than the bottle consumed in 2016.
    Me - 91/92, Wife - 90

January 25, 2019 - Pop and pour, consumed over 2 hours. Nose: Medium-plus expressiveness, raspberry, cherry, cinnamon, clove, saline, and hints of smoke. Palate: Medium bodied, sweet red fruit attack - raspberry and cherry, cinnamon and cola, good acidic backbone, nice mid-palate flavor persistence; raspberry, cherry and spice dominate the back-end and linger through a 45-60 second finish. This was a bargain for the $29 I paid though likely not up to expected standards for the $120 release price.
