Community Tasting Notes 5

November 2, 2020 - Further to my Note of March 26, '20: This is #8 from the original 12b case. This bottle was noticeably plummier than the last bottle--still portlike but now overripe plum: perhaps pleasant with the right food (sweet Asian?) but heavy and semi-dull on its own. The bottle has been stored in a warmer area (62o F +) over the last 6-8 weeks so I wonder if that had an effect. I'll try again with a better stored bottle during colder weather.

March 26, 2020 - Further to my Note of July 23 '18: This is #7 and continues to please. Consistent notes of mature nose, rich and dark fruit, good mouthfeel, almost portlike. It was gone before it had time to fade. Certainly notable and may deserve better because of its durability.

July 23, 2018 - Purchased a case for 10-12/b about 12 years ago from a local independent shop; this is #5. Decanted and found considerable sediment. Beautiful dark, rich color. Fragrant nose of blueberries, some oak. Body to match with rich mouthfeel. Almost portlike to start but lost much of fruit over two hours. Delicious on its own initially and ok with pizza, even as it faded. Stored vertically (due to synthetic cork) in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I consider this notable when considering quality, age, and price.

February 16, 2015 - Huge wine and loaded with sediment. Must be decanted or strained. At first it had gripping tannins on the finish but they smoothed out with a little air. Great PS flavor profile and aromatics. Easily will last many more years and improve.

February 5, 2015 - decanted 45 min (stood upright 36 hours, massive quantity of sediment). dark black-purple still; robust aromatics - roasted meats, grilled caramelized black plums, road tar, toasted spice & black pepper; full-bodied & unctuous, sweetly ripe roasted black fruits, concentrated blackberry preserves, spiked w/tellicherry pepper & bramble fruit acidity, tannins resolved. well, not your everyday quaff, kind of rustic & unsophisticated, but well-paired w/food.

dry-rubbed local spare ribs; sorghum-baked october beans w/tomato jam & rosemary; old school BF collards w/benton's bacon & ham hock
