January 6, 2024 - The silver lining and bling to help offset the TCA-riddled cloud with the last bottle of 2002 Giaconda Warner Vyd Shiraz, utterly despoiled by foul cork taint (all the worse as the wine itself under the muck seemed to be very very good).
This salvaged proceedings admirably, aided by a bottle of Clonakilla Syrah 2012 for good measure. A little older looking than the Cka, but not by much. Orange/brick rim, crimson hues starting to dull.
A supremely gamey nose, speaking of its maturity. Red and dark berries, spice and those inevitable green notes from this part of the world, but kept in check such that they add complexity. Lovely stuff.
Excellent palate. Soft, akin to velvet that dissolves in the mouth. Fine lines, glowing red berries, more spice and gamey hints. Fully mature and yet fresh. Texture is king. Almost luminous.
Not only did this bottle save Friday night but it did much to restore faith in this particular vintage. A fave of mine of the PIV line, a bottle last year was off-key, or otherwise I was, with sour aromas and almost sour milk acid. No issue here. That said, I liked it most 3-4 years ago when the fruit and exotic secondary characters were in their prime, even if the palate wasn’t as tender as it is now.
On its plateau but under the splendid screwcap (‘screwcap, my most excellent friend’, as parents who read Julia Donaldson of Gruffalo fame and in this instance Stickman might recognise the paraphrase) will glide on 5 or more years. I’ll knock one of the remaining two off this autumn/winter, and then decide to leave the last to age longer out of curiosity, or beat temptation Oscar Wilde-style by succumbing to it. No cork, no fear.1 person found this helpful Comment -

December 3, 2016 - Decanted for 1 hour. Quite full bodied, deep coloured, almost purple, with hints of smoke on the nose. Fruity palate with little acid. Needs more time to develop.

April 3, 2015 - A beautiful Northern Rhone-like, cool climate Aussie Shiraz. Med body, ripe tannins but for me the acid was sticking out. Will this integrate down the track? I sure hope so for my two other bottles. :-)

February 25, 2014 - Very much in the mould of a Cote Rotie
