January 12, 2021 - This spent 8 hours in the decanter first. Light ruby center with watery rim. Black cherry and menthol aromas to start. Light to medium weight, fluid, supple, and low acid. I would have been hard pressed to pick it out as Barolo at this point; the elements were pleasant but easy, simple, and on the sweeter side, almost like "Nebbiolo nouveau" (without carbonic notes) if such a thing existed. Later, some tobacco and a twist of citrus emerged, some acidity magically appeared, and the tannins seemed to agglutinate, giving it better grip. Still, I am left pretty underwhelmed and unsure about what this wine is really about and where it is headed. One thing I can definitely say is that the wine is still very much alive.

January 10, 2021 - This is a big wine. On the nose it’s all raspberry and cherry with traces of licorice and tar. Tannins dominate the palate—even after more than a decade. Bright red fruit is there as well. This could easily spend another 5 years aging (and probably should)

December 31, 2020 - Double decanted 3 hours. Delicious and drinking well. No rush here.

December 24, 2020 - Lightly bricking around the rim, medium to full bodied, tannins still prominent though starting to settle. Flavour profile is darker fruited (which I can sometimes view as overly extracted) but in this case I’m ok with it. I like this slightly better than the 2010 Baudana I had last month, and better than I expected.

December 21, 2020 - Light-medium ruby; aromatic, deeper fruits with black cherry, some citrus peel, slight menthol; palate is light-medium bodied, high alcohol (14.5%) and present but not overly so, medium-plus to high acidity, again richer black cherry fruit, seems still a bit coiled; finish is medium length. This is a concentrated, serious Barolo which could still improve for 5-10 years, a bit richer and darker than I expect from Vajra but well balanced. I have some Bricco from 2010, and I think that will need much more age. 90+
Day 2: more integrated, a bit more open and less coiled, and a bit brighter in fruit than yesterday. A small improvement, but still a serious Nebbiolo.3 people found this helpful Comment
