April 8, 2024 - Funky nose that needed 15 min in the decanter to blow off all kinds of VA, brett, reduction and what have you. Then came in his own. Lots of garrigue, farmyard funk and earthy elements intermixed with red fruit, blueberry and spice. 14% Alc, they did not go overboard with the alc luckily

February 10, 2024 - ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): White pepper, TANNINS, so, so spicy, so structured. This particular bottle is unusually tannic, reserved and powerful. There was a lot of debate about this wine, because many of us have had MANY bottles of the 2004 which is usually quite opulent and approachable. The general structure and reserve of this particular bottle was unusual, as none of us have ever encountered a closed bottle before. All that said, I revisited the last few ounces on day 2, and this remained fresh, powerful and shockingly structured.

February 9, 2024 - Deep dark crimson color. Intensely sweet red fruit and a hint of smoke on the nose. Similar tasting notes - sweet, mildly smoky strawberrries and sweet red plums on the nose.

February 7, 2024 - Blind, 3 hour decant. Garnet in the glass. Not much nose, for me.

Not many notes to this one. Thought it was a Syrah with the mild pepper notes. Didn't seem Grenache to me. My bad. Just didn't do a whole lot to float my boat. Again, probably just my palate.

February 1, 2024 - One of the Chinese New Year wines, welcoming the Dragon. Very popular tonight. Right off the bat, highly aromatic with farmyard funk, oak, dark and red fruit. I like the freshness here and the relatively moderate alcohol. Remains very drinkable, not a bruiser as so often seen in this region.

January 27, 2024 - 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (J&S’s): Blind, though easy to pick out as our bottle of Pegau in the flight. A bit lighter in color, I had placed this toward the end of the table with the lighter wines so that it would end up in the first flight. Aromas of cherry liqueur, dried herbs/garrigue and red berry fruit with the signature Pegau funk underneath. Medium-bodied, with soft tannin and nice acidity. Lovely red berry fruit on the palate, with subtle spice accents. Finishes with good length.

I think it faded a bit and would have shown a little better a couple of hours earlier in the first flight, although other tasters enjoyed this very much. At peak for my palate, now through 2025.

December 26, 2023 - What a beautiful wine, even better than the last bottle enjoyed in December 2011. PnP. At peak maturity; displays a deep garnet color with a small ruby core. A potpourri of deep, complex, and persistent aromas and flavors showing decaying forest floor, smoked meat, dried herbal tones, seasoned sandalwood, old shoe leather, stale cherry pipe tobacco, crushed fennel, dried fig, stewed cherry, chewy plum, day old raspberry preserves and a mineral laden vein of red iron ore. Rich and balanced mouthfeel with red fruits, oak, tannin and acids all in perfect harmony. Enjoyed with left over, smoked beef tenderloin. Very long finish, which really enhances and adds to the enjoyment of the smoked meat. At nineteen years, I doubt this will improve much more, but I think this will drink well over the next 1-2 years and possibly beyond.

December 10, 2023 - Oh man, if you like barnyard funk, then this wine is for you. Funky and gamey on the nose with red cherry and strawberry fruit. However, this has now really given way at this point to the tertiary notes of leather,, tobacco, forest floor, mushrooms and herbs. Still has some nice acidity and good long finish. I would drink now and over the next couple of years as it's probably at its peak.
