July 13, 2017 - An exceptional Zinfandel! Keeps getting better, thus the higher rating.

November 23, 2016 - Has attained lofty status. Top ten percent of all zinfandels. Probably will shine for another five to six years, bur why wait?

December 9, 2014 - Some question marks here. Decanted 1 hr. ahead, tasted over the next hour. Deep garnet color. Rich nose of black pepper, oregano, plums, blueberries. It's fragrant besides being rich, and it shows its old-vine, spice-forward Amador provenance. Medium-bodied on the palate, with an extracted core of blackberry, iodine, and inky flavors that go against the elegance that the nose suggests. Acid balance is smooth, indicating an approachable style of winemaking, maybe too approachable. Finishes quickly with more deep-black flavors, low grip, and near-zero tannins. Wines from this vineyard and this producer have traditionally been somewhat long-lived, but this wine breaks that agreeable mold. It seems to chase immediate accessibility, but along the way it picks up some inky extraction that complicates the final product. Is it good? Yes. Is it close to what you can hope for, given the vineyard and the label? No.
