August 18, 2023 - Despite ten years of bottle age, this is remarkably vibrant and primary. Notable raspberry type fruit on the opening nose. A touch of sous bois and liqueur underneath. Still quite fresh and juicy on the palate. Really excellent Pinot. New world for sure, but this would not be embarrassed in the company of “village” burgundy at the least.

August 2, 2022 - Restrained ripe cherry, lovely acid and tannins, with savoury notes (likely courtesy whole bunch) and oak influence in the background. Adelaide Hills via Burgundy. 13.5% ABV. Flying under the radar.

November 19, 2021 - Geoffrey Grosset is very much an under-estimated red wine maker. Wine reviewers in Australia love to pigeon hole wine makers and Geoffrey, already being feted for his riesling, cannot be recognised as an outstanding red wine maker. I wonder what the Burgundians think of this attitude. The Gaia that he makes is simply one of the most underestimated wines in this country.

With this pearl of wisdom out of the way, this pinot was a delight. Full of tension, balance and lovely structure. It pleased the drinker but also asked the drinker to ponder the value of Burgundy in 2021. The bouquet had red fruits and with an undertone of earthiness, smokiness and bacon rind. The body was a real fist in a velvet glove affair. Underneath the beautiful fruits (cherries etc.), there was a real strength and depth to the acidity and coupled with the oak, this pinot had some real intensity and subtleness at the same time. The finish faded a bit too early although it was nicely weighted while it lasted.

    Drink now or 4+ years.
