December 28, 2020 - Very pretty and soft at this stage , polished acidity and with a touch of an off dry edge albeit we are pretty sure this is a dry white. Soft petrol edge on the nose, light caramel, ripe stone fruits, tropical edge. Very good 92
March 21, 2020 - More balanced and attractive than my previous bottle, this wine--from what's typically my favorite Pichler bottling--shows ripe fruits and pronounced minerals in a big, bold package. This has the weight and length of a grand vin. Serious wine that's seriously good. Perhaps not as 3-D as my absolute favorite Austrians, but this is darn good.
January 31, 2020 - Winespecials Wine Evening (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Gabriel Standard
Popped and poured, from Magnum. Do not serve this wine too cold. It needs at least 11-12 degrees to fully unfold its flavours.
Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense nose with clean botrytis, ripe pineapple and apricot, honey, mineral core. Needs air and temperature to unfold.
On the palate dry, medium+ acidity, 13,5% abv, well integrated. Lots of power, pressure, wonderful mineral core, botrytis, ripe yellow stone fruit. Also some “band aid” notes. Very long. Still young, needs 2-3+ years. 93-94+
August 25, 2019 - Honningmelon, pasjonsfrukt, ananas og ørlite snev av banan. Flott friskhet i munnen på tross av den litt tunge frukten. Merkbar safran på smak.Flott fylde og intensitet. Litt saltpreg mot slutten før den glir over i lang ettersmak med deilig sødme og fin bitterhet. Herlig vin og beste flaske så langt. Kraftig, østerriksk stil, men ikke en sær vin lenger.
January 16, 2019 - Tropisk frukt på nese, litt på den tunge sida - banan og aprikos. Fra først av også litt svovel og rosin som blåser av. Intens i munnen, men friskere enn på lukt, mer i retning eple, med god syrestruktur og deilig frisk ettersmak. Så mye frukt at det gir e lite inntrykk av sødme selv om vinen er tørr - helt annerledes enn tysk riesling. Litt preg av nedfallsfrukt, men overhodet ikke negativt. Deilig vin i distinkt østerriksk stil.
October 3, 2018 - Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): Another surprisingly good Pichler. This has a lot of herbal and spice notes on the nose -- quite tropical and exotic, and the ripeness and sweetness here give this a lot more heft as well. Slightly oily on the palate, but there is ample acidity to pull it off in this vintage. Still, this is a reasonably heady wine, but this iteration is very nicely balanced. The way for me to think about these wines is to compare them to chardonnay more than Mosel riesling, as these will never be filigreed, delicate wines. But as broad, rich white wines with ample acidity -- yeah, this does nicely.
August 9, 2018 - Noe svovel først. Blomster, honningmelon. Litt treaktig, med noe sevje i ettersmaken. En anelse besk. Noe karamell, hint av botrytis. Spesiell stil, men ingen favoritt.
February 23, 2018 - A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Raveneau and Chave Vertical (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Warm and rich nose displaying yellow peach, pineapple, mango, lemon oil, sweet spices, burnt sugar and a hint of crushed rock. There is a hint of medicinal note that is interesting. Excellent concentration, rich opulent yellow fruit, warm and round, good acidity and a medium to long sweet yellow fruit driven finish. The fruit expression is riper and richer and the palate is not as focused as the Keller. Nice wine but outshined by the Keller.
January 31, 2018 - Popped and poured. Thirty years ago, I was lucky enough to meet a guy at the London Wine Bar in SF who liked to share his Austrian wines from the '20s with anyone who happened to be there on a Tuesday. They were awesome. But I never had tasted a young Austrian until tonight, and it, too, was awesome. Great color (though no real legs), an incredibly complex nose already showing the most perfect lambswool petroleum scents intermixed with apricot, and really lovely flavors which might take a little time to flesh out. Peachy aftertaste. The finish on this is a beauty. 4-14-17-9: 94/100.
