February 13, 2024 - Early Vday dinner at Burlamacco. Bottle gift from winery during our visit in 2013. Pop and poured. Drank slowly and re-explored again hours later. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet edge. Legs.
Nose initial tertiary mushrooms that blew off, then medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark licorice, floral tones, slight tar, balsamic, red cherries, red plums. Hint of soy and VA nail polish. Developed.
On the palate, dry, good high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), strong high tannins that get smoother with air and food, full body. Medium+ flavour itnensity, with flavours of savoury earth with touch of soy, dark red plums, dark red cherries, sweet licorice, sweet tar, sweet spiced oak. Truffle with more air. Long spicy finish.
    Day 3: Savoury meat broth.
Very good quality. Possibly as good as it gets at peak. Should hold at this good level for a few more years.

May 21, 2022 - il gran finale del Barolo di compleanno (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): The nose here is very perfumed and deep with strawberries, bright red cherries, dusty notes, licorice, spices, toasty notes, vanilla beans, crushed rocks, currants, pencil lead, and some tobacco leaf. This is wide open with the fruits showing more in the red spectrum compared to the 2003. The Full bodied feel has some weight and stature to it that doesn't show too large. The structure is resolving and has pulled back with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is right at the beginning of its window. This isn't for die hard traditionalists, but it is a wonderful wine that I can easily appreciate.

April 9, 2021 - Ruby red, lighter rim. Decanted for 6 hours. Extremely complex on the nose with fresh fruit and some more mature elements. Mushroom, truffle, forest floor and tobacco / tar. Very elegant and concentrated. Beautiful balance, sweet fruit and fine grained tannins. Extremely long. In a perfect drinking window, some development. No rush. Impressive wine

January 26, 2021 - Served blind, old wine smell, blew off to reveal a classical Barolo nose, sweet palate, guessing mature Barolo, thought 90s, the last glass was quite divine

August 17, 2020 - Deep garnet, somewhat cloudy and not at all transparent, lighter garnet rim. Slow moving tears, lightest stain. A clean nose of black licorice, Earl Gray tea, roses, sweet dried black and bing cherries, mint, cigar box, cherry fruit leather, stewed plums, and Bordeaux-esque burnished leather. Palate brings sour black cherries, tangy oven roasted tomatoes, everything present on the nose plus tar, burnt caramel, abundant tannins, dusty earth. I’ve read others describe this as medium bodied, but I sense a tiger that hasn’t yet been tamed.

March 3, 2020 - Exceptional. Opened and decanted 1 hour before drinking (on a delicious home-made Sicilian caponata). Nose of red fruit (surprisingly young nose for a wine of this respectable age). On the palate, it is refreshing, fruity, very rounded yet present tanins; very long finish. Pure velvet. Soooo enjoyable! What a remarkable wine. Pity this was my last bottle of 2 !. It could easily have kept another 5 or even 10 years I suppose. A monument! A complex and subtle giant....

January 12, 2020 - Dark red, with all the characteristic of a great, “modern” style Barolo. Drinking the wine, it does lean towards the traditional style, at least this is how it appears. Of course, extremely structured, layered and long elegant finish but with the powerful texture of an old school Barolo. I can judge when it’s optimal to drink this wine but the two remaining bottles I have I will at least let rest for another 5 year as I now have had the pleasure to taste it at this stage in it’s (I’m pretty sure) long life.

August 24, 2018 - Another stunning wine in this great line-up. Perfumed, silky and super elegant... and in a perfect place right now. Super ripe red fruit, sweet spices, savory herbs, crushed flowers, licorice and also some mint adding to the overall bright impression. It's full-bodied and dense but without being heavy, has medium-high acidity providing freshness and tension and medium-high tannin that is super silky. Excellent length. Beautifully complex, bright and silky… another beauty.
