March 21, 2021 - Day 2. The nose has opened somewhat, but still is pretty shy. Very classic (and I think Serralunga) nose of bitter tar-licorice and earth and a bit of leather, then behind that are - a beautiful rose petals smell, sweet and sharp spices - cinnamon, and some black cherry and red cherry. From a burg bowl this is almost getting to critical mass of being perfumed - almost there - The palate has opened more than the nose and but is very similar in flavor profile to the nose. This is verging on light bodied - very transparent and crunchy - high acid. At times it almost grips the mouth, at others it is light and lively but a bit reserved. Earth, tar-licorice, leather, cherry fruit, maybe a bit of black raspberry. Tannins are very fine and blend in with the acid. Gets more tart and somewhat mineral into the finish - can see more dusty tannins now. I think this needs another 5-10 to come out of its shell but I feel like the material is there and this has real poise and verve. Nose - 5-5.5+/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 4.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1+/2 = 15.5-16/20 (with 16-17/20 potential.)

June 20, 2020 - Oh, this was a great discovery. Cork had signs of wine 3/4 of the way through it but overall good shape. Somewhat muted nose of rose petals some wet leaves and underbrush. Well balanced, nice acidity. Showing some complexity due to age. Overall gorgeous, smooth semi-mature. Great with Pizza. Never had Barale before, searching out.

June 13, 2016 - This is fine. Nice licoricey fruit supported by a little spice, good acid/tannin balance. It certainly tastes like Barolo. But it's a bit lacking in complexity and depth, and probably too expensive for what it is. A corked bottle of the Castellero showed a lot more character under the TCA.

November 3, 2015 - Very traditional nose of tar, roses. Evolved with some red cherries and black fruit. Very nice.

May 30, 2015 - Really very good. Smells of lipstick, pomegranate, cherry, earth, cedar, iron and tar. It is a strong wine in the mouth. Filling the palate with powerful berry flavours and finishing with loads of savoury nuance. There is ample structure but its buried beneath the wines flesh for now.

October 28, 2014 - Beautiful, translucent dark ruby. Aromatics of pure dark cherry fruit along with tar, herbs and mint. Beautifully balanced and elegant. Classically structured but the tannins are super smooth. This is shockingly easy to drink right now but clearly will go for a long time. Really impressive. 93+

October 15, 2014 - Zak and Seth's Excellent wine and leftover wine adventure (Umi Nom (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn)): This is very old school. The nose started off with spice and primary fruit (red cherry), bright, then evolved to show great rose petals, perfume, than darker - tar, licorice, dung/earth (Zak says medicinal cherry / bark). Another pour - the nose is an intoxicating robe: cherry, strawberry fruit, so light and transparent, spice, roses. On the palate it starts with bright fruit, then adds a spice layer, soft tannins, bright acid. Tart. Leather. Dusty and chewy at the end. This is very old world - light on its feet, clear, and light to medium bodied. Really beautiful.
