Community Tasting Notes 2

July 12, 2018 - The nose is already fairly expressive, with tones of florals, damp earth and ripe red fruits; The medium-bodied palate has some stern structure underlying the red fruits and touch of oak spice, suggesting this has additional upside with additional bottle time; An interesting and unique Baga that is still quite youthful and likely needs some time to settle

August 19, 2017 - 100% Baga. Aged for 12 months in oak. Bottled in July 2012. 13,5% alcohol. Served blind.

Youthful dark ruby color, almost completely opaque. Pronounced nose of blueberry jam with more understated aromas of sunny, plummy fruit, sweet dark berries, a little bit of oak spice, a hint of jammy red fruit, a touch of cocoa and a whiff of minty herbal character. The wine is rich and full-bodied on the palate with rather noticeable tannic presence. Although ripe, the flavors feel more dry and savory than sweet with intense notes of sour plums, ripe blackberries, some spicy wood, a little bit of ink and a touch of baking spices. Although the tannins start to pile up, giving the wine a rather tightly-wound character, it still feels very smooth and balanced. Good, moderately high acidity. The finish is tannic with tightly-knit character and intense flavors of dark cherry, brambly blackberry, peppery spice, some gravelly earth and a hint of sour plums.

A very beautiful and nice Bairrada Baga, although leaning a little bit on the polished, modern style. Very well-made stuff that retains the characteristic, stern structure of Baga. The age of the wine was a real surprise when the wines were revealed, because it felt a lot more youthful. The wine will most likely develop nicely in a cellar for at least a decade more and there is no need to pop these babies open any time soon. Will keep for a few decades more. Expect the score go up with age. Pricey at 33,25€, but delivers for the price.
