September 26, 2023 - Dinner with Claudia Sottimano (Chicago, IL): This is on limestone soils, and I think it does show through a little in a profile that comes across as more delicate than the other wines tonight. I had thought that 2011 was a riper year, but Claudia mentioned that that wasn't really the case. Nonetheless I do feel more ripe fruit here, but there is also a softness to this makes it quite drinkable now already.

June 7, 2022 - Beautiful wine. Roses, violets, eucalyptus, truffle... A bit ragged on the tongue - astringent and not quite soft yet. Rustic, even. But this is a serious, grand wine of real poise and substance. Marvellous.

June 7, 2022 - Impromtu 2011 Barolos (Terra Rossa, Islington): In theory a lighter wine, in colour maybe but actually this was one of the sternest of the evening. Quite austere still. Great nose, very cherry and floral - lavender perhaps. Did not quite have the initial balance of the Barolos, and was as a result harder work at the start, but I had another sip later on and air definitely helps it. Deliciously sour fruit quite prominent on the palate, but I preferred the nose.

June 7, 2022 - 2011 Barolo* (Terra Rossa): Nice wine. Deep, plump nose, with a touch of tar, then with more air increasingly floral, softer, more rustic and gamey. A sense of the warm vintage, too. The first sip was surprisingly tannic (hey, I thought these 2011s were meant to be ready!), but that abated fairly quickly to allow the plump fruit to shine through. Bitter, tangy finish, though some sweetness showed after a while. We all enjoyed this, but I think the Barolos showed more tonight.

January 2, 2022 - Mature. On the austere side with muted fruit.
