Community Tasting Notes 2

May 14, 2015 - Located just south of Asti in Piemonte, this DOCG is probably one of the smallest DOCGs in Italy. A very interesting varietal wine. The grape Ruchè is thought from France. But I have yet come across a French varietal similar to it. Highly floral, perfumed, with a lot of rose petal note, grapeyness that reminds me of Moscato. (Lacrima di Morro d'Alba from Marche is another grape that shares some of the flavour profile.) Bright acidity despite the ripeness on the nose. It sure doesn't taste like it's 15% abv. Good concentration and length. If I have to nit-pick, a touch extracted for my palate, finish a bit rough. That said, give it a try if you are tired of drinking Merlot, etc.

April 10, 2014 - OK, so I've been in the Castagnole area for about 4 of the past 10 nights now, and I've been trying several different producers of a grape that I've really been able to live without. This bottle, while pleasant, doesn't change things; though Crivelli makes a good case. Opens with fruit, and a little of the Ruchè floral notes, but by the second glass, soil and caraway seeds dominate. The palate is as it should be, lifted, texturally pleasing, with a medium finish. Nothing wildly complex about this, but then it's still very young (purchased this afternoon at Casa de Ruchè - conveniently adjoined to Ristorante da Geppe - in Castagnole). Seems to ride the line between traditional and international. Newcomers to the grape that start here, would be rather spoiled, and might altogether miss the lovely typicity that say Crivelli produces. At 14€ it's not a recommend. This needs a year in bottle to come together. 15% abv, drink thru 2017.
