    August 13, 2019 - Brunello di Montalcino tasting (Riga, Latvia): 🏅Rating 91/100 (4,1⭐)

Cloudy w/ sediment. Ripe jammy fruits. Bit of smoked meat.

August 1, 2019 - In my cellar since release, second of 4-750's and 1-magnum. Decanted at 3pm for dinner at a local restaurant from 7-9pm. This one is quite confounding...it has characteristics than some people have noted as seriously flawed yet some hints of the high quality I saw in my previous bottle. The wine is extremely dense and dark with no bricking. The nose at first is very powerfully stewed with pruny and earthy aroma's as well as chocolate (brett?). It never quite blows off and yet glasses of it over time show varying degrees of this. On the palate it is much better in that it shows good acidity as well as delineated dark fruit flavors like black plum and pomegranate and cherry liqueur along with a slightly hot alcoholic undertone (I get the port-like references some have noted) Can't really decide if I like it or not. Finish is pretty long but this is awkward and probably flawed, though if it is brett, it would have been ok if it was throttled down a notch or two.(?) Very big, powerful full-bodied Brunello yet not harsh or excessively tannic. A real puzzlement...

The initial notes on the wine at the 2-3 hour point before going to dinner...will revisit the note after dinner.

With dinner the stewed prune was a little less obtrusive but still there...was decent with a beautifully cooked venison sirloin at Restaurant Lorena in Maplewood, NJ... but in the end I'll still say flawed, probably brett.

Smoky, game. Over ripe. There must be some bottle variation, as it seems more advanced for its age. Silky on the palate. Wine of the year according to 2006 Wine Spectator magazine. Ranked 100pts.

July 3, 2019 - After reading some of the recent reviews, I was bracing myself for the worst, praying this bottle wasn't corked or otherwise flawed. The prayers paid off and the bottle was sound and didn't disappoint. Decanted it and gave it about one hour to breathe before drinking. On the nose, plenty of dark fruit (blackberry & plum), slight earthiness, leather. Very satisfying to drink, with some primary fruit left and plenty of dusty tannic grip. With air time, a little spice & cedar emerged and a long, palate-coating finish. Paired beautifully with grilled skirt steak.

(CASANOVA NERI BRUNELLO TENUTA NUOVA) #3; COLOR-tremendous, dark for a Brunello; NOSE-great, strawberries & huge Vanilla extract, hints of: strawberry, cranberry, cedar box, menthol; TASTE-if you're a big fan of Syrah and CA cult Cabs, you like this wine; very good, very structured, ton of fruit, very extracted, crushed blackberries & raspberries w/ hints of cinnamon & vanilla extract, very luscious & fruity, super silky finish, but not like a traditional Brunello, more like a New World fruit bomb, ; WS's 2006 Wine of the YEAR; WS-97; GV-93

(CASANOVA NERI BRUNELLO TENUTA NUOVA) #2; COLOR-dark; NOSE-dark chocolate, classic Brunello, little cherry, hint of cedar box, sour raspberry; TASTE-great complexity, cherry flavors are really profound, very well made Brunello, a little hollow on the mid-palate, a lot of potential; WS's 2006 Wine of the YEAR; WS-97; GV-93+
