June 30, 2019 - fully mature, perfect balance of soft red fruit, elegant tannins and soft acidity. Almost perfect.

April 24, 2019 - Marzipan and VA, red fruits and spices a bit tomato. This is quite pretty, maybe a bit past peak but still very good.

April 24, 2019 - Loved this. A surprisingly clean Musar - there's certainly a faint touch of VA and some leathery funk (would it be Musar without it?), but those notes are rather restrained and this is dominated by really bright, surprisingly youthful and vibrant red fruit that make it feel younger than its 42 years. The structure here is fully resolved and this is drinking really nicely now.

April 24, 2019 - Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): I'm so glad this didn't come to us blind, because there would have been no way for me to get here. This wine shows its age, but it's another one that wears it with dignity. A slight bit of rust, some mushroom, and a bit of wet hay on the nose here. I've read plenty of notes about the dirty/funky properties of Musar, but I have to say that this bottle was incredibly clean. You can tell on the palate that this was probably once a very luscious and fruity wine, and there are still some desiccated fruit elements here that are a clue to what was before. Nonetheless, it's the earthy, leathery, and animale elements here that dominate, but in a restrained way. Coupled with a slight hint of brown spice, there's really a lot to love about this.

November 19, 2017 - Forty Years young and possible 10 plus years into the future. I gave this bottle a 92 as much for it's longevity but remains a quality age wine. This is the last of 6 bottles laid down in my cellar in 1983. Ullage 1/4 inch below the neck. Cork in good shape. Used a gas insert to extract cork as have had previous bottles cork separate. Modest bricking from age around the edge. Colour light ruby. Upon first open heavy tar licorices predominate. After 1/2 hour undertones of bacon fat, dark berries and herbaceous scents did show. A nice round fullness with some acid and tannin structure fading in the background. Bravo for age worthy and superior quality.

(Chateau Musar) This was very interesting and had great freshness on the palate but had way too much VA for me to enjoy. This was my first older Musar and I could appreciate what it was but I was not feeling it this night. Have LOVED the '95, '97 and most of all the '88.
