May 21, 2019 - Drank at BLT celebrating my sons 16th birthday who also is a 2003 vintage. We’ve already drunk the 6 pack of Phelan-Segur at his prior birthdays. (which we enjoyed very much)

I am glad to say that my previous bottle was a fluke. This was beautiful. The color is mesmerizingly clear and nuanced despite handling in the (taxi) cab on the way to dinner. It is still young with good structure and acid. The fruit is ripe but not jammy. The blackberry, currant and plum flavors work in concert but have not melded. The oak provides a nice shading but is not intrusive. I think it has room to develop and plan to hold the remaining bottles for my sons 18th, 21st and 25th birthdays.

It was a budgetary stretch at the time but I am very pleased to have laid down good Bordeaux and Port upon the birth of each child.

May 18, 2019 - Very very nice after a 3+ hour decant. Blackcurrants, chocolate, good acid. Not at all the hot unstructured stuff that some 2003s can sometimes be.

Drank after a white burgundy (Francois jobard meursault-charmes 1990) and a red one (Joseph drouhin volnay 1990). Time to learn about burgundy as well!

May 12, 2019 - Very nice. Very left bank. Very Bordeaux. The heat of the vintage doesn't seem to have left this wine drinking as anything other than Bordeaux. In a good spot with very nice balance . Finish goes on and on. 94ish

May 11, 2019 - Pleasantly surprised that this showed as a traditional Pauillac wine. There was lots of black currants and blackberries with just a bit of black earth, but mostly subdued fruit with fine tannins. I kept some of the bottle gassed for a 2nd night which showed just as well. So while I think it is delicious now, it will show well for another 10+ years. I just wanted to check out a bottle from a hot vintage before finding too late that the fruit was gone.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Heatwave vintage. Rather glossy hue. Not a roasted style on the nose, dense and creamy confit style. Violets. Very well-styled fruit, rich but not overly sweet, fat or roasted, clean and ripe but remarkably atypical and pure for the vintage. Certainly a rich and creamy style on the palate though, dense and concentrated, and there is a firm pervasive style of deep, chewy, ripe but coating tannins, this aspect being very typical of the vintage. Tesseron says you can't spot this as a 2003 in a blind tasting, as it has good freshness; he is right on this point, but the structure of the wine is very typical. There is a long finish dominated by tannin. The acidity is rather muted but it is there. A good wine. Totally different

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Dark, super-macerated, super-ripe fruit. A fat, sexy style on entry, with a creamy texture carrying a raft of exotic, spiced and peppered fruit. Beneath it all there's a big, brawny structure, although rather soft acidity, engendering a fat, opulent finish. The tannins coat the mouth here. I think there is sufficient substance to carry these tannins. Very good.
